From time to time, a musician I hadn’t even noticed before catches my interest. Thanks to our expanding involvement in the world of classical music (the International Folkwang Guitar Festival, Harmonia Cordis, the International Guitar Festival in Iserlohn, …), my musical horizons have expanded considerably.
My latest discovery is Walter Abt—a musician who moves seamlessly between classical, jazz, and world music.
A musician who has been playing AER for many years and whom I’ve only just discovered by chance (mea maxima culpa).
From his biography:
Walter Abt, born in Memmingen, is an exceptionally versatile composer and artist with a special talent for improvisation, shaped by his friendship with gypsy jazz musicians. By the age of 17, he was already playing a wide variety of instruments in various ensembles: electric and acoustic guitar, piano, trumpet, flugelhorn, double bass, accordion, and trombone. He refined his technical skill and precision across various musical styles as a soloist at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, the State Conservatory of Verona, and in master classes at the Mozarteum in Salzburg…

Markus’ musikalische Reise begann 2010 als Sänger und Gitarrist des Akustikduos THE STREETLES. Was als Straßenmusikprojekt startete, führte das Duo in den vergangenen 16 Jahren durch weite Teile Europas und Australiens - mit Auftritten in über 17 Ländern und mehr als 500 Städten.
Mit der Veröffentlichung seiner EP „Fond Memory“ startete Markus 2016 seine Solokarriere. In seinem Kölner Studio schreibt, produziert, veröffentlich er seitdem eigene Songs und arbeitet aktuell an seinem Debütalbum „New Chapter“, das Anfang 2027 erscheinen wird. Seine Musik verbindet die Energie jahrelanger Live-Erfahrung mit persönlichem Songwriting und einer klaren Leidenschaft für akustischen Klang.

Markus’ musical journey began in 2010 as the singer and guitarist of the acoustic duo THE STREETLES. What started as a street music project has taken the duo across much of Europe and Australia over the past 16 years—with shows in over 17 countries and more than 500 towns.
Markus launched his solo career in 2016 with the release of his EP “Fond Memory.” Since then, he has been writing, producing, and releasing his own songs in his Cologne studio and is currently working on his debut album “New Chapter,” which is set to be released in early 2027. His music combines the energy of years of live performance experience with personal songwriting and a clear passion for acoustic sound.
