Over the years, BINDER GmbH’s engineering work has resulted in 217 registered patents and utility models, 111 of which are currently active. 📐

Our patents and utility models cover a broad range of fields, including Thermal Management and Refrigeration, Air, Humidity and Gas Management, and Enclosure, Insulation and Thermal Architecture. ⚙️

BINDER’s inventive history goes back several decades. First solutions were already patented in the 1970s and 1980s. Further developments followed in the 1990s, including tilt-proof racks with bead guides, APT.line – Advanced Preheating Technology, the thermally decoupled interior door and vacuum expansion racks. Some of these ideas continue to influence our products today.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁? 🚀

A few years ago, we shared the story of a research team at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts investigating how cartilage cells respond to changing gravitational forces. 🌌

The preparation started on the ground. Primary cartilage cells were cultivated under controlled conditions using a BINDER CO₂ incubator before being taken to Bordeaux for an ESA parabolic flight campaign.

During 31 parabolas, the researchers exposed the cells to alternating phases of hypergravity and microgravity.

But what happened after the flight? 🛫

The results were later published in the peer-reviewed journal Microgravity Science and Technology. Contrary to what previous research might have suggested, the team found no significant changes in the microtubule and vimentin structures of the cartilage cells during the flight.

And the research continued.

In subsequent ESA-funded experiments, the team investigated whether altered gravity affects cellular calcium levels and membrane potential. Two further peer-reviewed studies followed in 2022, again finding that these cellular parameters remained largely unaffected by short periods of altered gravity. 🔬

BINDER is acknowledged for its support in both the 2020 and 2022 publications.

Today, researchers in Lucerne continue to investigate how altered gravity can help us better understand cartilage biology and explore new approaches to cartilage regeneration.

A good reminder that space research can generate insights with applications far beyond space. ☄️ 🛰️

And that was definitely the case when the VWR, part of Avantor Central Europe Sales team stopped by at the BINDER headquarters in Tuttlingen.

During their visit to BINDER GmbH, we took the opportunity to talk about our future collaboration in Central Europe, discuss how we can further strengthen sales activities in the region, and exchange ideas on where we see additional potential together.

And since it’s always easier to talk about products when they’re right in front of you, Fabian Konrad gave the team a closer look at some of our latest products, features and developments.

For us, meetings like this are particularly valuable: getting away from emails and Teams calls, standing together in front of the actual products, asking questions, exchanging market feedback and developing ideas together.

September 1 marks the beginning of a very special new chapter at BINDER: a new generation of trainees has started their professional journey with us.

For BINDER, training young people in-house is an important part of preparing our company for the future. We want to give young talent the opportunity to build professional expertise, gain practical experience and get to know BINDER from the ground up. 💪

At the same time, our training programs help us retain valuable knowledge within the company and develop the skilled professionals who will strengthen our teams in the years ahead. Our trainees experience our processes, products and ways of working first-hand and gradually take on more responsibility.

After their first days at the company, the next activities are already waiting: several team-building events will give our new trainees and their trainers the opportunity to get to know each other better, build connections and grow together as a group. 🚵‍♀️⚽🎯

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?

CO₂ is heavier than air. That is true. This quickly leads to the assumption that CO₂ collects at the bottom of the incubator, while there is less of it at the top. For cell cultures, this would be a problem, because different shelves would then provide different conditions.

𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘂𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿
In a well-designed CO₂ incubator, this does not happen. The CO₂ is not simply fed into the chamber. Instead, it is preheated to match the incubator’s temperature and deliberately mixed with the existing atmosphere. At BINDER, this is done by a Venturi gas mixing head.

The Venturi principle is simple and effective: at a constriction, the flow velocity increases. This creates negative pressure, which draws in atmosphere from inside the chamber and mixes it with the supplied CO₂. Gentle gravity convection and diffusion take care of the rest.

Even after the door has been opened, the CO₂ atmosphere recovers quickly. The CO₂ level rises, distributes throughout the chamber and has been shown to return to a stable setpoint after around ten minutes. An additional fan is therefore not necessary for a homogeneous CO₂ atmosphere.
