𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻

Many cell culture protocols include a value that seems clear at first glance: 5% CO₂. In laboratories, this value is often simply set on the incubator. For the incubator, it is a clear setpoint. For the cells, however, something else matters: the CO₂ partial pressure.

𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘃𝘀. 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝘀

At sea level, 5% CO₂ by volume corresponds to a CO₂ partial pressure of roughly 50 millibars. This pressure is what matters, because CO₂ is part of the bicarbonate buffer system in the culture medium. This system helps keep the pH stable. For many mammalian cells, the target is around pH 7.4.
As altitude increases, however, ambient pressure decreases. The air becomes thinner. As a result, 5% CO₂ no longer produces the same partial pressure as it does at sea level. A laboratory in Davos or Bogotá therefore has to assess the set CO₂ value differently than a laboratory in London.

In La Paz, Bolivia, just under 8% CO₂ would theoretically be needed to reach a CO₂ partial pressure of about 50 millibars again. A seemingly simple percentage value therefore becomes a clear example of how closely cell culture and atmospheric physics are connected.

For sensitive samples, vaccines and other delicate materials, “cold” is not enough. What matters is controlled storage that remains reliable, even when conditions become critical.

Am 08. Mai 2026 fand in Tuttlingen wieder die „Nacht der Ausbildung“ statt. Auch bei BINDER nutzten viele Schülerinnen und Schüler, Eltern und Besucher aus der Region die Gelegenheit, unsere Ausbildungsberufe, Fachbereiche und Karrierewege kennenzulernen.

Ein besonderes Highlight war der Besuch von Martin Strobel, ehemaliger Handball-Nationalspieler und Europameister. In mehreren kurzen Vorträgen gab er vor rund 245 Besuchern Impulse zu Motivation, Teamgeist und persönlicher Entwicklung. Auch unsere Auszubildenden erhielten in einer separaten Präsentation spannende Einblicke.

Neben den Vorträgen standen vor allem die persönlichen Gespräche im Mittelpunkt. Unsere Auszubildenden und Fachbereiche gaben praxisnahe Einblicke in den Arbeitsalltag und beantworteten viele Fragen rund um die Ausbildung bei BINDER.

Zum Abschluss bedanken wir uns herzlich bei allen freiwilligen Helferinnen und Helfern, Ausbilderinnen und Ausbildern sowie unseren Auszubildenden. Ihr Einsatz, die gute Organisation und die vielen Gespräche haben den Abend zu einem gelungenen Erlebnis gemacht.

𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, 𝘄𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗢₂ 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟰𝟴%. 📉

Sustainability requires measurable targets – and consistent implementation. At BINDER, we are continuously working to use energy more efficiently, reduce emissions, and further optimize our processes. Our energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001 provides an important basis for this.

The current figures for 2025 show our progress compared to the base year average of 2019–2021:
✅ CO₂ emissions: -48%
✅ Electricity consumption: -16.4%
✅ Gas consumption: -14.4%
✅ Share of photovoltaics in total consumption: 19.2%

This also marks further progress compared to 2024, when the figures stood at -41.9% CO₂ emissions, -5% electricity consumption, -12.1% gas consumption, and 17.1% photovoltaics.

Concrete measures are already in place: LED conversions, more efficient compressed air technology, and optimized hall control systems are helping us further reduce our energy demand. In 2025 alone, we have already saved 142 MWh of electricity. This corresponds to around 40 metric tons of CO₂.

By 2030, we are pursuing a clear target: 100% CO₂ neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions. To achieve this, we are continuously reducing emissions across our business operations step by step – measurably, transparently, and with responsibility for a more sustainable future.
