XENAKIS / PISARO
"Xenakis/Pisaro" moves between pulsating energy and meditative stillness: Iannis Xenakis’ Psappha and Rebonds are considered milestones in percussion literature—intense, rhythmic, and uncompromising. Their raw power and complex structures create a physical presence that unfolds through dance. In contrast, Michael Pisaro’s Barricades evokes a state of deep reflection through its hypnotic sounds. This music—architecturally constructed, rhythmically ecstatic—naturally invites movement. Luiza Braz Batista’s choreography responds to these impulses, intertwining them with themes of ritual, eternity, and space. She draws particular inspiration from Xenakis’ own work as an architect and his exploration of structures that transcend time.
The music is performed live by percussionist Oded Geizhals, creating a direct and immediate dialogue between sound and movement. The interplay between dance and live percussion transforms the stage into a space where rhythm, poetry, and physical expression merge into a shared experience.
Water plays a central role in this piece—as the origin of all life, as an element of transformation that both shapes and dissolves structures. It carries memories, flows relentlessly, and connects places and times. The origami boats that appear in the performance are more than fragile paper objects for Luiza Braz Batista: they are memories of her childhood, of folding small boats and watching them drift on water, of pathways home, of moments passing and returning, of routes that are found and lost. They embody both transience and the cyclical nature of movement, rhythm, and storytelling.
Within this interplay of live music, dance, and poetic imagery, a performance emerges that unites the sublime with the ephemeral, the archaic with the meditative.
