Fragments of Akiota – No. 1

My first paper cut from my artist residency in Japan is finished!

During my first days in Kake, I spent a lot of time exploring the town, looking for inspiration and discovering little details.

One of the first things that caught my eye were the colourful signs around town, illustrating local highlights – from frogs and fireflies to traditional farmhouses and Kagura masks.

After experiencing a fascinating Kagura performance last weekend, I knew which motif I wanted to start with!

Here is a little glimpse into the creative process, from the first sketch to the finished paper cut.

And this is just the beginning of Fragments of Akiota!

Artists Laila Seidel and Irina Klomp, plus Ana from ROD, got together recently and this is what came out of it!

We met, looked through all the applications, talked, compared, changed our minds a few times :) and finally decided which artists will be coming to the walls of ROD.

We received 9 applications for this first open call and decided to build the first ROD Exhibition Programme with 8 artists — one exhibition at a time, from November all the way to June.

Today we will send the confirmation emails to the selected artists, and we’ll start sharing the programme with you very soon.

It’s already looking wonderfully varied — different styles, different backgrounds, different kinds of work — which feels exactly right for ROD.

Very curious to see how all of it will slowly take shape on the walls over the coming months. ❤️

Last week, I was asked to explain reverse glass painting in 30 seconds. 😄

Well… that’s possible. But there is SO much more to say about why painting on glass is such a fascinating and fun technique.

You work backwards, starting with the tiniest details. Colours behave differently. Transparency becomes part of the image. And every time you turn the glass around to see the front, there’s that little moment of surprise. ✨

So I wrote about it instead.

My new blog article “The Brilliant Surprise of Reverse Glass Painting” is now online – have a look if you’re curious about how the technique works and why I’ve kept coming back to it for around 15 years.

And if you want to pick up a brush and try it yourself, even better:

I’m teaching a Reverse Glass Painting Workshop this Sunday afternoon at ATMA in Prague. 🎨

I recently sent this painting on plexiglass to Paris as part of an exhibition project. 🇫🇷

I keep coming back to reverse glass painting because I love its luminous colours and all the possibilities this technique offers. Painting on the reverse side and viewing the finished work through the glass or plexiglass creates such a distinctive effect.

It’s a technique I never seem to get tired of exploring. ❤️

Have you ever tried reverse glass painting?

I have something new for the emerging artists among you. 🎨

Over many years of exhibiting internationally and working with galleries, museums and cultural institutions, I’ve gathered a wealth of experience about the professional side of being an artist – including many of the things nobody really tells you when you first start showing your work.

And now I’m bringing that knowledge into a new series of professional development workshops for artists.

We’re starting on September 20 at ROD in Prague with:

Exhibiting with Confidence

We’ll look at what artists need to clarify when working with galleries and exhibition venues: expectations, responsibilities, agreements and all the practical details that can make the difference between a stressful exhibition experience and a professionally prepared one.

The workshop is limited to 10 participants, which means there’ll be plenty of room for questions, discussion and your own exhibition plans.

And on October 4, I’ll be back at ROD with Artist Residency Planning – more about that one soon.

I’m very excited to finally share this side of my experience with other artists.

If you’re an artist in Prague – or know someone who could benefit from this – please share it with them. 👇

Wer ist am Samstag dabei? ✂️🌸

When I first created the photographs for my series **Abundance**, I thought they would become paintings.

That had always been my way of working. Photography was a starting point, a sketchbook, a reference.

But something unexpected happened.

The photographs already felt complete.

Instead of becoming paintings, they became a body of work in their own right.

That is why you'll now find a dedicated **Photography** section in my online gallery for the first time.

It feels like a natural extension of my artistic practice, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it leads.
