Opera and animation can be a brilliant match when the design unlocks the imaginative power of the music. Working with animator and illustrator has taken us on a journey through German romantic opera from The Flying Dutchman to Die Rheinnixen last month . Next up is a new production of Wagner's Tannhäuser for the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Lisbon. Opening 23rd April 2026.

Our production of Offenbach's Die Rheinnixen in London is making waves even in the French press.

"la direction d’acteur est impeccable", "une esthétique expressionniste parfaitement en accord avec le lieu. Le ballet des elfes est ainsi le prétexte à un réjouissant dessin animé en noir et blanc" **** Forum Opéra

A little bit of history was made last night. Die Rheinnixen, Offenbach's little-known contribution to German romantic opera, received its first-ever UK staging last night at the Battersea Arts Centre in South London. Very proud of an extremely hard-working cast, conductor, musicians, design team and crew who have worked miracles over the last few days to make it all happen.

In the last days of Stalin’s reign, a mysterious phone call from the Kremlin launches a desperate search for a missing pianist. Inspired by the life of the pianist Maria Yudina, this new chamber opera explores the role of music in people’s lives during one of the darkest periods of Soviet history.

This was my first full libretto and a project born during the pandemic that has now culminated in this new album release by Birmingham Record Company.

Thank you Joe Cutler for going on this adventure with me and giving it your all to create this supremely atmospheric score. Simon Hall at RBC has done a brilliant job editing the album and making the piece into a unique 21st-century take on the radio opera genre.

We were so lucky to have a cast of British contemporary music giants alongside BCMG and Sian Edwards with Xenia Pestova Bennett's piano fragments providing an essential dramatic thread through the piece.

And finally thank you to all the trusts, foundations and sponsors who have made this project possible in such a difficult climate.

Out on 14th November on all streaming platforms

Give it a listen. I hear we featured on Antena 2 in Portugal today!
Look forward to sharing extracts soon.

Staging performances outside of a conventional theatre can be the most exciting adventure. I learnt that working with Graham Vick's Birmingham Opera Company a decade ago and now I'm in one of South London's most interesting venues: the Battersea Arts Centre directing Offenbach's Die Rheinnixen for . The Grand Hall was devastated by a fire in 2015, but did a fantastic job with the restoration. We open on the 30th October and there are further performances on the 31st, 1st and 2nd November.
