Our final throwback! This week we will be looking back at 8th Apotheose with artist . The talk and vocal performance (without blue, her body) took place at HuMBase on 22.10.2020, followed by a playlist and drinks at Korridor Bar. The performance took place in response to an exhibition by Lowlands Art Collective.

Lucy Rose Cunningham’s art practice looks at the performative use of audio-visual art, the works she makes often emerging as live performances utilising voice, movement and written words in the form of publications and print. Collaboration motivates and guides the work; polyphonic readings present multiple viewpoints of our changing world. Exploring sound art as a holistic embrace, Cunningham seeks to use voices to reflect the mutuality between people and the spaces they dwell in.
“Thinking about the performance for Apotheose, the space becomes an extension of the body. Emotions are explored through voice and movement; the room incites thoughts, and my performance breathes back the pulse of lived experience. The room and I are a feedback loop, collecting and exhaling each other’s rhythm. Each breath, each note and noise is in conversation with particular works in the show.”

Janneke van der Putten is a vocalist and visual artist based in Rotterdam (NL). In an intuitive and physical way, she explores her voice as a sound texture. She has specialized in extended vocal techniques, producing two or more sounds simultaneously: basic tones, harmonics, interferences – like glottic attacks – and spatial reflections. Van der Putten uses architecture as a natural sound amplifier and as a trigger for echoes or other sonic effects. Wandering in space makes the sound move and generates a dynamic listening experience. Her rhythmic and conceptual approach to singing is inspired by the cycles of the breath, the body and the earth. Her performances are often performed without electrical amplification. In this way, she focuses on the exploration of space itself: how it sounds, whether it is lit or not, and where the audience is located.

Voice-Skin is a production for voice and electro-acoustics performed by Janneke van der Putten (NL), with compositions by Werner Durand (DE), Sajjra Xhrs Galarreta (PE) and
Philemon Mukarno (NL). Portable sound system designed by Jesse Howard (US) & Arden Rzewnicki (US). Photography by Gabrielle Barros Martins. Made possible by Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Performing Arts Fund and Akademie Schloss Solitude. Produced by Stichting Idraola, Rotterdam, 2019-2021.

Jan Hofer’s body of work results from an interaction with circumstance. Choosing a reactionary approach rather than one based on initiating action, his work takes on multiple forms of artistic production. Through performances, interventions, installations and reconstructions, allowing for the examination of particular place or situation. In processes like these, he comments humorously and critically on what he encounters in everyday life.
For example, he carries bulky objects from a work integration workshop through the public space into his studio, giving them a short visibility (Gschwür Transport, 2016). Or he reacts to his studio stay in a London gated community with the video work Groundwork, a tutorial for all those who want to break in, break out, undermine things or connect people and places.

Oder er reagiert auf den Atelieraufenthalt in einer Londoner Gated Community mit der Videoarbeit Groundwork, einem Tutorial for all those who want to break in, break out, undermine things or connect people and places.

It was so wonderful to host Daniela, and we particularly enjoyed the pizza she made at the after party, using the dough from her performance!

This week on Apotheose is dedicated to looking back at  6. Apotheose with artist Daniela Maria Geraci . The talk and performance took place at HuMBase on 12.09.2019, followed by a playlist and pizza at Ins Blaue.

Daniela Maria Geraci’s work is informed by the study of gesture, and the ways that the gesture can or cannot be recorded, translated, remembered, re-enacted and reconstructed. Through various digital, analogue and performative mediums, her body of work addresses issues of Sicilian diaspora, touching on displacement, and nostalgia of traditions passed through generations, with a particular focus on the gesture of kneading dough. When kneaded, the dough’s visceral material quality is a recording of each gestural pounding imprinted on its surface. The re-enacting of this monotonous gesture, and the sounds produced from doing so, is a nod to the equally monotonous nature and longstanding history of kneading bread now lost to the impatience of modern society.
