An Update on Mark

We want to take a moment to share some news regarding Mark and his withdrawal from the competition. Mark began experiencing discomfort with his hand, but being the true competitor that he is, he bravely tried to push through and give it his all. Out of concern for his wellbeing, his parents took him to get it checked out, where it was discovered that his hand had swollen significantly. The doctor immediately began treatment to help get him on the road to recovery.

In true Mark fashion, he wanted to wait until morning to see if there was any improvement, holding onto hope that he might still be able to compete. After a heartfelt conversation with his parents, the difficult but wise decision was made to step back, prioritize his health, and allow his body the time it needs to heal properly.

Mark, we want you to know that we are 100% behind you and incredibly proud of the courage and determination you showed throughout this entire experience. This is absolutely the right decision, and there is so much more ahead of you!

Junior Gold is right around the corner, and we will be cheering you on every step of the way as you compete at the USA National level as well. So for now, rest up, get healthy, and come back stronger than ever.

We've got your back, Mark! 💪🎳

The hard work, practice, and preparation are complete—now it's time for Mark to head to Berlin and compete in the biggest youth bowling event of the year!

As the Rhineland-Palatinate medal winner, Mark will proudly represent our state on one of the sport's biggest stages. This is an incredible accomplishment and a testament to the dedication, determination, and effort he has put in throughout the season.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported Mark along the way—whether through practice sessions, head-to-head matches, coaching advice, encouragement, or simply cheering him on. Your support has helped make this opportunity possible.

Mark, know that your entire community is behind you. No matter the outcome, we are incredibly proud of what you have already achieved and honored to have you representing us in Berlin. And remember—you won't be making this journey alone. Coach Marc will be there alongside you, ready to offer guidance, support, and encouragement whenever you need it.

🔥 THE FINAL SHOWDOWN DID NOT DISAPPOINT 🔥

WOW. What a night at the lanes.

The highly anticipated rematch between Mark Griffin and Samantha Zunker delivered everything you could ask for—and honestly, you could not have scripted a crazier ending.

Mark came out absolutely firing in Game 1, striking early and often to build a commanding lead and take the opener by 30 pins.

But champions respond—and Samantha did exactly that.

Game 2 was all Samantha as she battled her way back, erased the deficit, and added extra pins on top to reclaim the overall lead heading into the final game.

That set the stage for an intense Game 3 showdown that came all the way down to the 10th frame. Shot after shot, both bowlers answered the pressure until Mark finally pulled away late to secure the victory.

Now here’s the unbelievable part…

Last week, Samantha won the match by 40 pins.

This week, Mark won the match by 39 pins.

That means after two full head-to-head battles, 24 games combined, and countless pressure shots thrown on championship conditions…

THEY WERE SEPARATED BY JUST ONE PIN.

Yes… ONE PIN.

What an incredible display of competitive bowling from both athletes.

While the matches were exciting for everyone watching, this was ultimately about helping Mark prepare for next week’s National Championships—and these battles did exactly that. Not only was he challenged physically on demanding lane conditions, but mentally as well, forcing him to make adjustments, stay composed under pressure, and compete frame-by-frame against a top-level opponent.

A huge shoutout also goes to our head mechanic Tony, who went the extra mile by programming the lane machine with the exact oil pattern that will be used at Nationals, giving Mark the best possible preparation experience before heading to Berlin.

Mark, we hope you enjoyed the challenge, embraced the grind, and most importantly gained confidence heading into Nationals.

Now it’s time to go chase that Gold Medal. 🥇🎳

This week, we had a special challenge match at the lanes featuring one of our outstanding youth bowlers, Mark Griffin, who called out adult bowler Samantha Zunker for a friendly competition to help prepare for his upcoming championship season.

If you’ve been following our page, you know that Mark is the RLP U18 Champion and will soon represent Rheinland-Pfalz at the National Championships in Berlin in just a few weeks. Mark has also earned the title of USBC European Pepsi Champion and will proudly represent Spangdahlem—as well as Armed Forces Europe—at the Junior Gold Championships this July in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

His challenger, Samantha, brought plenty of experience of her own. Sammy has an impressive bowling résumé, including multiple European Pepsi Championship titles during her youth career and a National Championship gold medal in 2017. She currently competes in Germany’s 2. Bundesliga, one of the country’s top competitive bowling leagues.

To make things even more exciting, the center put down an unknown USBC championship oil pattern, giving neither bowler an advantage and creating a true test of skill and adaptability.

The two bowled a three-game total pinfall match, and it was a fantastic battle from start to finish. In the end, Samantha edged out the win by just 40 pins, but the real victory was the valuable competition and preparation for Mark as he gets ready for Nationals in just two weeks.

This match was all about supporting one of our talented youth athletes and helping him sharpen his game before taking on the nation’s best.

If you’d like to watch high-level bowling and cheer on Mark before he heads to Berlin, they’ll be competing again next Thursday at 1600, once again on a mystery pattern.
