Chapter 2 – The Journey of the Calico Fox

Deeper in the pumpkin field, the little fox leapt paws first into the biggest pile of leaves. When she climbed back onto a pumpkin to rest, she did not notice the old red mask lying in the leaves below, its painted eyes following her every move. Until it rose into the air, and she turned around and screamed.

She ran without looking back and crashed straight into someone striped, who had been sleeping peacefully in the leaves. Not the best way to meet. But it was the start of a friendship.

Together they followed the foxfires through the dusk to a small moonlit shrine. And there, waiting for the moon festival, stood a pyramid of moon dango. For two hungry travellers, it came just in time.

This October I am following one little calico fox through all 31 Inktober prompts. Every Monday I share a new chapter of the story, in ink and in colour.

The hand. The tools. The medium. The art.

A pair of scissors, pliers, a comb, a brush, and a pile of faux fur that doesn’t look like much yet. Then, hour by hour, it becomes a face. This calico was trimmed, shaded and shaped by hand until she looked back at me with those amber eyes.

I fell in love with this format when I saw it on .dari page. Her oil paintings are stunning, so please go and show her some love. Here is my faux fur version of it.

The little fox woke before the sun, flour-white clay already waiting on his workbench. He pressed and pinched until two pointed ears appeared, then a narrow snout, then the quiet hint of sleeping eyes.

But clay is fragile, and a fox is meant to wander. So he poured silicone over his tiny sculpture, held his breath, and waited for the mold to set. Swirls of smoke-grey and frost-white went into the resin next, each one a little different, the way no two foxes ever share the same coat.

Last came the eyes, painted by hand, and suddenly someone was looking back at him.

Handmade in the burrow, signed Kirafox on the back. Which colors should the next little fox wear?

Chapter 1 – The Journey of the Calico Fox

It began on an ordinary morning, with a bowl of apples on the kitchen table and a little fox who could not sit still. Something was calling from beyond the old red torii, where the stone kitsune keep watch and the spider lilies bloom in the colour of fire.

On the other side, the world grew strange. Pumpkins rose like hills, and the fox stood on top of one, very small and very curious. And in a cracked old pot, a cactus slowly opened its single eye and waved hello.

Part 3 – Three Guardians

Sealed in gloss and hung on silver chains, the three owls are finally ready to leave the burrow: the Moonlight Owl, the Golden Light Owl and the Autumn Ember Owl.

Each one was cast and painted by hand, so each exists only once. They are looking for someone who loves quiet forests, golden evenings and the hours when the world falls asleep.

Now available in my Etsy shop and on kirasfoxburrow.de – link in bio.

Part 2 – Painting the Night

The owls woke up pale as fresh snow, and the little fox knew they were waiting for their colours.

She dipped her brush into shimmering mica and gave each of them a story of its own. One caught the moonlight in shades of glowing blue. One gathered the last golden rays over the fields. And one took on the warm copper glow of autumn embers. Stroke by stroke, feather by feather, until their dark eyes seemed to look right back at her.

When October settles over the woods, the colors change: dark bark, pale birch, the rust of fallen leaves. This pair was made from that palette.

Each ear is trimmed, brushed and shaped by hand, and the inner edges are painted one careful line at a time. Then come the little treasures you might find on a forest walk: golden rings, crimson blossoms, fern sprigs and a scattering of tiny sparks like dew catching the last light.

They are made for long walks under turning trees, for costumes and conventions, or for anyone who wants to carry a bit of autumn along.

Part 1 – The First Pour

Early morning in the burrow. The little calico fox tiptoed to the workbench while the kettle was still humming, carrying a secret she had kept for weeks: a mold she had shaped with her own paws, in the form of a barn owl’s face.

Slowly, drop by drop, the resin filled the hollow. Three owls, waiting to be born. Now all she could do was leave them to sleep through the night and hope they would wake up whole.

I work with faux fur. So I decided to try clay.
For years my hands have lived in soft fur, building ears, tails and masks. This time I wanted to learn something new, so I sat down with a cold lump of clay and waited to see who would find their way out of it.
It was an owl. It took three attempts until the face felt right, until the heart-shaped mask and the quiet eyes looked back at me the way I had imagined. From there it went into a silicone mold and was reborn in resin. The colors are poured straight into the cast, so no two owls will ever be the same. One woke up in autumn gold and ember red, the other in the deep blues of a night sky. Only the dark eyes are painted by hand, and every pendant is signed on the back.
The owls were only the beginning. Foxes and cats are already waiting on my workbench.
Autumn or night sky, which owl would you choose?

When the lamp burned low, three little pairs of ears sat finished on the workbench, each holding a piece of the day.

Golden Fern, with the amber clearing tucked inside.
Ember Bloom, calico like the fox himself, with the last red flowers of summer.
Dark Chestnut, with fern caught mid-change beneath the old trees.

And on each one, a golden maple leaf charm, swaying gently in the lamplight. A new, petite shape somewhere between cat and fox, and each pair exists only once.
