The Bacchantes were women devoted to Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and fertility (Dionysus in Greek mythology). Dissolute and lascivious in nature, these priestesses participated in frenzied rituals called Bacchanalia, which included music, dance, and wine consumption, to achieve a state of ecstasy. They were often depicted wearing animal skins, ivy wreaths, and carrying a thyrsus (a staff covered in ivy or vine, often topped with a pine cone, and considered a ph***ic symbol of the life force of the god Bacchus/Dionysus). Their ceremonies could also include fertility rites or or**es.
