“Il Salvatore Salvato” - “The Saved Savior”: is a sculpture by Italian artist Davide Gelso, carved from the wood of an ancient olive tree in Salento, Puglia.
According to the story behind the work, the olive tree had already died, and the artist began shaping it into the Crucified Christ. Shortly after the wood was taken away, a fire burned through the surrounding field and destroyed other olive trees nearby. The tree that became this Crucifix had been saved from the flames.
What was once a dead olive tree became an image of Christ crucified : a sign of suffering, redemption, and hope rising from ashes.
The body of Jesus has been modestly covered in this post only because of platform rules.
