Beautiful necklace of large biconical bronze beads with bell pendant
Necklace made of 16 long, biconical bronze beads, most with net, dot, or groove decoration. At the bottom is a pendant in the shape of an elegant bell.
The city of Djenné in Mali was founded around 800 AD on the foundations of an earlier fishing settlement. It experienced significant expansion in the 13th century and flourished for many centuries, partly due to a stable trade relationship with Timbuktu. Beyond this, Djenné was also a very important trading post for caravans crossing the Sahara, thus serving as a link to the Mediterranean.
It cannot yet be definitively established whether bronze artifacts of this type, which were often uncovered and recovered in the 20th century due to changes in river courses, originated in Djenné or simply found their final home there as coveted luxury goods and status symbols through ancient trade connections.
