In my series, The Tails of a Cowry, Owo Eyo,“ I celebrate my
Yoruba heritage through portraits of a lady wearing a bucket cap adorned with cowries. The cowries symbolize a connection across time, representing wealth, peace, and the deep rooted traditions of my people. Each shell encircling the cap reflects our cultural history and its enduring power.

For me, the cowry is more than just a symbol; it embodies the strength and beauty of the Yoruba community. This series captures how these symbols link our past, present, and future, honoring the values that have shaped my life and the heritage I hold dear.

Through vibrant hues and intricate patterns, each painting invites viewers to explore the profound significance of these small yet powerful objects, celebrating the enduring mystery and legacy of tradition.

In meiner Serie “The Tails of a Cowry, Owo Eyo” feiere ich mein Yoruba-Erbe durch Porträts einer Dame, die einen mit Kaurimuscheln verzierten Eimerhut trägt. Die Kaurimuscheln symbolisieren eine Verbindung durch die Zeit, sie stehen für Wohlstand, Frieden und die tief verwurzelten Traditionen meines Volkes. Jede Muschel, die den Hut umgibt, spiegelt unsere kulturelle Geschichte und ihre andauernde Kraft wider.

Für mich ist die Kaurimuschel mehr als nur ein Symbol; sie verkörpert die Stärke und Schönheit der Yoruba-Gemeinschaft. Diese Serie zeigt, wie diese Symbole unsere Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft miteinander verbinden und die Werte ehren, die mein Leben geprägt haben und das Erbe, das mir am Herzen liegt.

Durch lebendige Farben und filigrane Muster lädt jedes Gemälde die Betrachter dazu ein, die tiefgreifende Bedeutung dieser kleinen, aber mächtigen Objekte zu erkunden und das anhaltende Geheimnis und Vermächtnis der Tradition zu feiern. Oluwatobiloba Fasalejo, 8.2024
