Paintings by Ruprecht von Kaufmann from his show which just closed at the Buchheim Museum.
Painting geeks can swipe for videos of beautiful surface details. Von Kaufmann is a masterful figurative painter but also treats paintings as physical objects, using linoleum as a surface which he can dig into and cut reliefs and slivers within the painting. Collage and caked on paint are sometimes integrated onto the surface.
His figures shift seamlessly from lines to fully realized forms, only to be interrupted by painterly marks. The overall effect is a stimulating discombobulation eliciting curiosity and a sensing and seeking of connections and an explanation. There are lyrical movements and interrupting riffs, this is jazz.
The exhibition was titled “Leben zwischen den Stühlen“, referring to how artists live a bit between normal positions in life, often struggling to find their place. The series is symbolically autobiographical while examining family dynamics.
