JAN KUCK – VA BENE SENZA RIDERE: Irony, Neon, and the Absurdity of Our Present
In his solo exhibition VA BENE SENZA RIDERE at MAIIIM in Genoa, Jan Kuck presents work that navigates the realms of pop culture, language, and social analysis. Curated by Virginia Monteverde, neon, sculpture, and text coalesce into a precisely crafted field of tension.
At the center is a present that has lost its balance. “If we take everything so seriously, we end up taking nothing seriously at all,” says Kuck. His works respond to a society that is increasingly veering into the absurd—where people “shoot” with smartphones rather than guns, where everything revolves around the self, and where a sense of responsibility toward the community is lost.
Kuck’s response to this is not moral, but visual: reduced, pointed, often just a few words. “Brevity is of great importance in my work,” he says. Language becomes light—becomes neon that simultaneously seduces and questions.
It is precisely this reduction that gives the works their sharpness. Between humor and unease, a space emerges in which laughter becomes almost inevitable—not out of lightheartedness, but out of the realization of how absurd our reality has become.
His internationally renowned neon works such as WHO CARES, TIME MATTERS, or TRUST? translate language into light and space—striking, direct, and at the same time ambivalent. They are complemented by mirror works
