The KULA Compagnie stands for transnational and multilingual theater. The idea emerged seven years ago in a laboratory for actors that explored how to work collectively and learn from each other, unfettered by production contexts. In the meantime, various artistic projects have arisen from this association and have embarked on international journeys. Each encounter involves new artists from different countries. The KULA Company is also a social and administrative laboratory. It delegates artistic responsibility to the respective initiatives it supports. The "Laboratoire"

The Laboratoire is a place for experimentation beyond any aesthetic or formal constraints and country-specific directorial styles. It is free of hierarchies, undogmatic and transnational. As such, it is a place where new ways of working and interacting can be explored: How can the individual abilities of the actors be broadened in a way that different languages no longer have a dividing effect, but complement each other in the play of identities, languages and cultural backgrounds? KULA ist der Name eines Tauschsystems, das in Neuguinea zwischen den Einwohnern verschiedener Inseln praktiziert wird. Getauscht werden Gegenstände, deren Wert ökonomisch nicht messbar, sozial und kulturell aber von essentieller Bedeutung ist. „Kula-Objekte“ werden im Laufe der Zeit mit der Geschichte ihrer Weitergabe aufgeladen und tragen so eine Botschaft des Friedens und der Verständigung in sich. Die KULA Compagnie steht für transnationales und mehrsprachiges Theater. Im Respekt vor einer Tradition, die älter ist als alle, die sich durch dieses Ritual inspiriert fühlen, bildet Kula ein Geschenk, dass zum Aufgreifen und Weitergeben verführt. Der Gedanke tauchte vor sieben Jahren in einem Labor für Schauspieler_innen auf, das sich mit der Frage beschäftigte, wie man frei von Produktionszusammenhängen kollektiv arbeiten und voneinander lernen kann. Inzwischen sind diverse künstlerische Projekte aus diesem Zusammenhang erwachsen und auf Reisen durch verschiedene Länder gegangen. KULA est le nom d'un système de troc pratiqué en Nouvelle Guinée entre les habitants des différentes îles. Ils échangent des objets, dont la valeur ne peut être mesurée économiquement, mais qui revêtent une importance essentielle sur le plan culturel et social. مفهوم الشركة

אופן התנהלות

Kula company היא מעבדה חברתית ומנהלית המאצילה אחריות אמנותית ליוזמות המתאימות לה. "המעבדה"

המעבדה היא מקום להתנסות מעבר לנורמות פורמליות או אסתטיות וכן סגנונות בימוי ספציפיים למדינה. היא נקייה מהיררכיות, וככזאת היא מקום בו ניתן לבחון דרכי עבודה ואינטראקציה חדשות: כיצד ניתן להרחיב את היכולות האינדיבידואליות של השחקנים באופן כזה שלשפות השונות כבר אין השפעה מגבילה, אלא יוכלו השחקנים להשלים זה את זו במשחק הזהויות, שפות ורקעים תרבותיים?

מיקומה של "המעבדה" כבר מיומה הראשון היה מרחב האמנות BIRACH. https://birach.de. Kula è il nome del tradizionale baratto praticato dagli abitanti di differenti isole nella Nuova Guinea. Gli oggetti di scambio hanno un valore sociale e culturale, non misurabile da un punto di vista economico. Ogni “oggetto-Kula”, col tempo, si carica di valore, nutrendosi della storia che disegna il suo viaggio. Pace e tolleranza sono i messaggi che durante gli scambi gli oggetti portano con sé. Questo principio di scambio è secondo noi lo specchio della storia condivisa della nostra Europa. È il fondamento della nostra compagnia. La Kula Compagnie. La Kula Compagnie è transnazionale e multilingue. Rispettando una tradizione più antica di tutti coloro che si sono ispirati a questo rituale, Kula crea un dono, un invito, da passarsi di mano in mano. L’idea è nata sette anni fa, in un laboratorio per attori nel quale si esplorava il modo di lavorare collettivamente, ispirandosi gli uni agli altri, senza particolari restrizioni derivanti da una normale logica di “produzione”. Negli anni sono nati molti progetti artistici, ispirati da questa suggestione, e hanno viaggiato per il mondo. Ogni nuovo progetto e ogni incontro portano con sé artisti provenienti da diversi paesi. Organizzazione. La Kula Compagnie è anche un laboratorio sociale ed amministrativo, perché conferisce responsabilità artistiche ad ogni iniziativa che decide di supportare. Il laboratorio. Il laboratorio è un posto libero, dedicato alla completamente alla ricerca, oltre ogni confine estetico-formale, lontano da peculiari “stili” personali. Il laboratorio è transnazionale, non dogmatico, privo di gerarchie prefissate. È un posto in cui vengono esplorati nuovi modi di intendere il lavoro e l’interazione tra persone, culture, mondi. Come ampliare le capacità individuali degli attori in modo che linguaggi diversi non abbiano più un effetto divisivo, ma si completino a vicenda nel gioco delle identità, delle tradizioni e dei diversi retroterra culturali? Dal primo momento il laboratorio ha avuto luogo presso il Seminarhaus di Birach.

This week, founder and director of KULA Compagnie Robert Schuster, along with KULA’s ambassadress Khitam Hussein, met with Ji-young KIM, Dean of External Relations and Professor of Acting at the School of Performance at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.
An encounter shaped by openness, curiosity, and trust.
Across continents, theatre and art become spaces of dialogue — reminding us of the importance of cultural exchange, shared responsibility, and transnational cooperation.

„If society is speechless, we come with many languages.“

Tahera Rezaie and Sara Khalili are two of 13 Afghan women artists who have been evacuated by KULA - against all odds, and against the silence of political institutions that had already written them off.

Today, they stand on the stages of the world - as artists, activists, and voices of resistance.

Their journeys are marked by forced displacement and fearless self-expression. With every role, they challenge silencing, reclaim space and embody what transnational performance can mean: healing, defiance and connection.

We‘re honored to create with them.

What forces from the past take possession of our bodies? How can we give them space and attention without them gaining power over us? How do we deal with our present day demons?

The Dibbuk by Salomon An-ski poses questions that the transnational KULA Compagnie and its international ensemble address artistically. In order to actively promote cultural understanding and the representation of diverse realities of life, on stage and beyond, KULA stages An-ski‘s original in different versions. This years Akko Fringe Festival will feature an ensemble of actresses and actors from Germany, France, Israel and Russia. The production places An-ski‘s DIBBUK in a contemporary interreligious context. With 6 languages and different cultural backgrounds coming together on stage, DIBBUK - between (two) worlds relies on the transformative power of theater to build bridges by transcending seemingly irreconcilable conflicts through artistic creation.
