A look at MJW’s favourite moments throughout the years - Local Campaign!

🧅 Sustained 💍

‚Sustained‘ showcases selected work by 37 staff and recent graduates of the Central Saint Martins BA Jewellery Design course. Central Saint Martins are delighted to finally return to Vitsœ in Munich following a three year break due to the COVID19 pandemic. Drawing from Vitsœ’s inimitable design ethos and reflecting the breadth of enquiry encouraged at Central Saint Martin’s, ‚Sustained‘ will explore and celebrate the endurance of creativity during the exceptional circumstances of the past few years.

This year, alongside the course team, 2020 graduates Roanne Sanchez-Watts and Jo Harrison-Hall have been invited to guest curate the exhibition. Their curation is informed by questions surrounding both the temporal and functional nature of jewellery and its relationship to ourselves, our cultures and the natural world. The work will be presented on and around the timeless 606 Universal Shelving System, designed by Dieter Rams in 1960 and made by Vitsœ ever since.

STÜCKWERK MUNCHEN

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Alkie Osterland is a jeweller and glass artist creating narrative and conceptual objects with silver, gems, glass and manufactural historic components of bijouterie – full of quotations. She works in Gmünd and runs a gallery for contemporary arts and crafts. You find her work is in exhibitions in Germany and Europe and in private and public collections. In 2011 she was winner of ”Karfunkel” Prize for contemporary jewellery in Schwäbisch Gmünd.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jewellery is often worn as a messenger, among other things he may say: I’m rich! Alkie Osterland’s brooches make this statement abundantly clear. In the manner of medieval jewellery (in which Alkie Osterland gained experience reproducing the Staufer crown, 2011-2013), she sets precious stones alongside glass stones. Each stone is provided with a price tag – so the person opposite can read the value while dining and decide whether the invitation might be worthwhile.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ulrike Rößler was born in Germany and came to her training as a goldsmith via a detour. After a few years as an employee, she has been working independently since 2016 and has already taken part in a number of exhibitions in Hanover, Schwäbisch Gmünd and Munich, among others.
In the 18th century there was a trend to wear the lover’s eye as a watercolor on ivory in an ornate piece of jewellery. Ulrike Rößler transports this trend into the present day and puts the it in a new interpretation in direct contrast to today’s display of feelings and emotions in social media. For this purpose, she deliberately uses the decelerated technique of embroidery as a contrast to the inflationary digital photos.

The title of this year’s group show by Galerie Door refers to the Chinese year of the rabbit. The rabbit is said to be upright, intuitive, elegant and cautious. In addition, hares and rabbits (because of their high reproduction numbers) refer to the spring that is coming. The work in this exhibition takes you to (imaginary) places of speed, sexuality, fertility and prosperity. You are most welcome.

The Jewellery–Linking Bodies department approaches the field of jewellery as an independent art form at the interface of applied and fine art. We share a ‘jewellery attitude’: a fondness for tactility, details, zooming in and out, and working with scale. However, what the students make varies enormously, from body-related objects to installations and performances.

Embodying Jewellery as an attitude as opposed to conceiving of it, as its definition implies, opens endless pathways into imagining the world and its relations anew. Jewellery as an attitude, asks for a constant questioning of the historical, material, environmental and societal context, in which the idea of a Jewellery is investigated. Bodies of Knowledge by current students and alumni (2018-2023) of the Jewellery Linking-bodies department*, present a world in which bodies are not defined by being human or not, and Jewellery is a fundamental link that places all kinds of bodies in relation to one another. Jewellery is then a vessel through which individual and collective contemplation, propositions and investigations craft the potentialities of being otherwise.

GALERIE GEDOK MUC

Hù|mus is the Latin word for “earth” or “ground”. Humus is the fertile part of the soil, organic matter created through the decomposition of plant and animal parts. Animals, Fungi and Microorganisms all play a part in this process, turning what once was into the the beginning of what will be. As the seedbed of new plantlife, Humus is at the same time start and end of an eternal cycle. Thus, it can be seen as a metaphor representing the creative process itself. The various approaches of the participating artists mirror the natural diversity that sprouts from the earth. The exhibited works take up perishable materials, be it materially or as reference for their shapes and surfaces and play with the forms nature creates, be itseeds, grasses, leaves or flowers. Hù|mus was also part of Munich Flower Power Festival.

FLUIDIFYING... ROTATING EIGHT ELLIPSES AROUND INTERNAL BOUNDARY CURVE, EQ by Helen Dilkes, 2021
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Acrylic sheet, iridescent foil, 925 silver, acrylic paint, pearlescent pigment
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Helen Dilkes is an artist–jeweller–researcher who lives and works on Wurundjeri country in Melbourne, Australia. At the heart of her work is the notion of a clear and connected temporal–spatial continuum. Helen exhibits both locally and internationally.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With this piece Helen explores the interconnected relationship between our felt ex- periences and matters that extend much further beyond us. It is one bound entity, yet with a multiplicity of elliptic articulations. What is implied with this work is that there is no one way to consider something; Helen proposes we ‘fluidify’ and break down ideas of process/product, subject/object, object/space and time/space.

Meet the Team! ✨

Veronika Muráriková is a Stockholm-based artist and the Public Programme Coordinator for Munich Jewellery Week. Her work challenges traditional craft by exploring stretched materiality, virtual space, and shared authorship in a multidisciplinary practice. Veronika creates unconventional ways of perceiving and navigating spaces by using exaggeration and restriction in her art. In addition to her artistic work, she is also a contributing editor at Current Obsession magazine and co-hosts the "Undisciplined. Crafting Conversation" podcast, which explores transdisciplinary practices.

The ideas about jewellery appear to be different. But the understanding of the material and its possibilities of expression are an impulse that put them together. The various materials correspond with each other and inspire each artist differently. The stories they create connect with nature and wakes up questions about conscious relationship towards nature.

THE POOL RING by Joarla Caridad, 2018

Larimar, silver 925, 14k gold

Joarla Caridad is based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, returning there from London after completing her BA Jewellery Design degree at Central Saint Martins. Joarla is a second generation silversmith and is committed to Dominican craft, she does this by designing and making pieces with local creatives and gemstones.

During a winter in London Joarla was feeling cold and homesick, so she took out some Larimar pieces from home. Sinking into the water-like effect of the stone, she imagined herself inside it, surrounded by warm water and back with the ones she loves. This is how The Pool Ring was born.
