Im Jahr 1952 hatte der ARD-Musikwettbewerb seine Premiere in München, wo ihn bis heute der Bayerische Rundfunk ausrichtet. Er gilt als der größte Wettbewerb für klassische Musik weltweit, da er jährlich in mehreren Fächern stattfindet und insgesamt 20 Wettbewerbskategorien umfasst. Für viele Künstler war München das Sprungbrett zur internationalen Karriere. The ARD International Music Competition

is one of the most renowned and large-scale competitions of its kind, was founded in 1952 by the public broadcasting radio stations of the Federal Republic of Germany. The invitation to participate in this competition is extended to young musicians, who are ready to launch an international career.

Intimate, intense and unmistakably Schubert: Vio Musica explores the composer’s string quartets and the emotional worlds they contain. 🎻

Schubert will play a key role in the string quartet competition: his Quartettsatz in C minor, D 703, is required in the semifinal. In the final, the ensembles may choose one of his last three quartets – including the famous “Death and the Maiden”.

Why did Vivaldi write so many concertos for the bassoon? 🎶

Vio Musica takes a closer look at the Baroque master’s fascinating bassoon repertoire – music full of virtuosity, character and surprising colours.

At the 75th ARD International Music Competition, the candidates can choose from ten of Vivaldi’s bassoon concertos for the semifinal, performing alongside the Münchener Kammerorchester - MKO without a conductor.

Turn up the sound and travel through 75 years of music history. 🎧
From Mitsuko Uchida and Jessye Norman to Thomas Quasthoff and Sol Gabetta, generations of young musicians have taken to the stage of the ARD International Music Competition and taken a defining step in their international careers.

Through the European Broadcasting Union - EBU Music Exchange, seven Competition events will be shared with radio stations across Europe and beyond.

A string quartet can carry far more than melody. It can preserve a composer’s memories, translate literature into sound or turn something as personal as hearing loss into music.
Every work tells a story. But it takes four musicians listening, responding and breathing together to bring that story to life.
