The year begins once again the way years have come to begin: as a refresh of a browser tab where the apocalypse has been open for months. People consume news about wars, political crises, AI mania, and collapsing democracies on the same screen where, three seconds later, they’re recommended to shrink their pores. Everyone is exhausted. Not just tired. Competently tired. LinkedIn-compatible tired.
Artists still go to their studios, move things a few centimeters, and have conversations that effortlessly shift between late capitalism and the question of who forgot the extension cord. The software is being updated. Existential uncertainty continues to receive security updates from the Stone Age. The idea that art can exist outside of social contradictions seems about as reliable today as a Wi-Fi signal in the basement.
No one seriously believes that art will save the world. At the same time, however, no one has completely given up. The works in these eight positions therefore function less as answers and more as recordings of a nervous system: humorous, paranoid, tender, overstimulated. And somewhere within all this noise, they carry on. Not because the contradiction has been resolved. But because stopping completely would likely be an even stranger form of madness.
