Baladi is definitely one of my favourite dance styles. All of the Egyptian dances are beautiful, elegant and sensual. But Baladi holds a deeper meaning. It is deeply rooted in Egyptian culture, working class life-experimentience, and holds space for female strength, assertiveness and confidence like no other style.

Who knows me and my style of teaching will be aware how much emphasis I put on emotional expression in Raqs Sharqi. Understanding the music, creating an emotional connection to it and being able to translate those feelings into movement is even more crucial than elaborate technique. It is the ESSENCE of Raqs Sharqi.
