Wanna see a comparison between different small brush pens and a dip pen? 🖋🖌
These are written with the 7 small brush pens that I own, alongside with one written with dip pen.
Here are the list of pens that I’ve used:
(Left)
1. Dip pen - Leonardt Principle EF (aka LPEF)
2. Pentel Brush Sign Pen
3. Pilot Fude-Makase (Small)
4. Zig Letter Pen COCOIRO
(Right)
1. Tombow Fudenosuke (Hard tip)
2. Tombow Fudenosuke Twin
3. Sailor Fude Nagomi (Small)
4. Kuretake Fude Pen (Hard)
My favourite small brush pen for writing copperplate style is the Pentel Brush Sign Pen. It feels great in hand, and the transition between thick and thin are smooth, so I really enjoy writing with them. They are my go to whenever I wanna have a quite writing session, or when I travel and I don’t want to bring dip pen and ink with me.
I also love the Pilot Fude-Makase pen, it has similar feeling as the Pentel but can produce an even thinner hairline! The only reason why I recommend the Pentel more is that they are easier to get, you can buy them from most of the countries, but for the Pilot Fude-Makase, they harder to find. I bought mine when I was back in Hong Kong, but I haven’t seen any here in Germany. So since I have more colour choices for the Pentel, I mostly stick with those pens.
The two Tombow Fudenosuke pens has similar name but they feel very different from each other. The hard tip one feels harder when you write, and the twin feels a lot softer, and can produce thicker downstrokes. If you’re a beginner, the hard tip pen would be easier to control.
The Zig Letter Pen is a fun pen to be used in journals, it can’t produce a stroke that’s too thick so it’s good when you write smaller letters.
Any of these pens are your favourite? Which one do you think looks the best in this calligraphy style? Tell me in the comment below 👇🏻
