The exhibition brings together new works by Ivana Matić and Elpida Tsaousidis that engage with tradition and culturally shaped systems of interpretation. Last Friday, I visited the printmaking workshops at with my students as part of the project seminar “Inside the Gallery“ at the Department of Art History () at JGU Mainz ().

The seminar is conceived as a project in which the students develop and realise their own exhibition with the artist Soomee Yu (). Our visit marked the first meeting.

Soomee Yu introduced us to her artistic practice and presented a selection of her works. It was particularly fascinating to see different printmaking techniques in action, including mezzotint and silkscreen. After all, we are in the city of Johannes Gutenberg, who initiated a media revolution more than 550 years ago with his invention of printing using movable metal types (just saying…).

This direct engagement with material and process forms an essential foundation for the students‘ future curatorial work.

A big thank you to Soomee Yu for her openness and inspiring insights! 🧡
And to Katrin Graalmann, head of the printmaking workshops, for her generous and kind support! 🫶🙏

We look forward to continuing the collaboration and to the exhibition!

ON VIEW 🫘
Ivana Matić’s series of delicate pyrographic drawings, in which the artist engages with the bean oracle (Serbian: falanje), a centuries-old practice rooted in the Balkan region. In this tradition, formations of beans are interpreted to find answers to future developments or existential questions.
The works are part of “Kopf, Herz, Schwelle“, a duo exhibition by Ivana Matić & Elpida Tsaousidis, on view until May 16.

We are open today from 12-4 pm…☕️

UPCOMING EXHIBITION
We are pleased to announce the second solo exhibition featuring new works by Josephine Adu.
Under the title “Shimmern” (Shimmering), Josephine Adu expands her painterly practice into space, continuing key aspects of her work in which the effect of colour takes center stage. Central to this is the compositional constellation of colour and form, as well as the interplay between the application of paint and tonality.
In addition to works on paper and canvas, the exhibition includes painted wooden panels and three-dimensional objects that move within the tension between painting and sculpture. In this works, wood does not only serve as a support for the image but becomes visible in its own materiality and physical presence. The often thinly applied layers of paint partially reveal the structure of the surface beneath, thereby emphasizing the physical presence of the works.
Josephine Adu works through a process-based approach, applying paint layer by layer. The spectrum ranges from opaque to transparent colour fields that merge into one another, creating subtle transitions. Predominantly muted, often dark tones are interrupted by subtle modulations of light and dark as well as by unexpected intensities. This results in a multilayered interplay of density and transparency, which is echoed in the exhibition title “Shimmern”.

Josephine Adu lives and works in Mainz. She completed her studies in Fine Art at Kunsthochschule Mainz in 2025 as a master student in the painting class of Prof Anne Berning. Her works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions at institutions such as Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, Hessisches Landesmuseum Wiesbaden, RedGer Art Gallery in Ulaanbaatar, and Sayner Hütte in Bendorf. She is currently participating in the .pfalz.triennale in Trier and at .koblenz.
