A new body of painted works on wood by Josephine Adu is currently on view at the gallery as part of her solo exhibition “Schimmern“ – until 4 July.
Alongside works on paper and canvas, the exhibition includes painted wooden panels, printmaking works, and three-dimensional objects that exist within the tension between painting and sculpture. This expansion into the space does not appear as a break, however, but rather as a logical continuation of what is already inherent in the paintings. Wood functions not merely as a support, but emerges visibly through its specific materiality and physical presence. The often thinly applied layers of paint allow the structure of the underlying surface to remain partially visible, thereby emphasizing the tangible, corporeal quality of the works.
