✨ Announcing the First Irène-Lejeune Prize Winner for the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München ✨

A milestone for Munich’s dance community: the Irène-Lejeune-Prize has been newly dedicated to the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München (BJBM), focusing on supporting young dancers at the very beginning of their professional stage careers. We are delighted to announce that the 2026 prize has been awarded to Olja Aleksić! 🎉

Awarded every two years, the Irène-Lejeune-Prize honors outstanding achievement, exceptional talent, artistic expression, personality, and a strong sense of team spirit—while also specifically encouraging the continued artistic development of the recipient.

Born in Belgrade, Olja trained at the Lujo Davičo School and the Belgrade Dance Institute before continuing her studies in Munich at the Ballet Academy of the University for Music and Theatre Munich. Olja joined the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München at the start of the 2025/26 season.

From her early standout performances at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung Matinees — including the central duet in Kinsun Chan’s «JIT» by Kinsun Chan and the leading couple in Grand Pas de Hongrois from «Raymonda» — to her striking interpretation of Marco Goecke’s «Devil’s Kitchen» at the Matinee this morning, Olja has impressed with her remarkable stage presence and artistic depth.

Endowed with €5,000, the Irène-Lejeune Prize not only recognizes excellence but also sends a strong signal of support for the next generation of dance talent and the future of ballet in Munich.

Congratulations, Olja!

Congratulations to everyone who performed onstage this morning for the second of our Spring Matinees. It is safe to say that the future of dance looks bright!

With students of the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Theatre Munich presenting two exciting new creations and ensemble members of the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München excelling in Marco Goecke’s 2025 creation for the ensemble «Devil’s Kitchen» we were thrilled to feel the support and warmth emanating from our loyal audience this morning.

Such a performance couldn’t take place without the support of so many people behind the stage — we are so thoroughly grateful indeed!

Join us in Autumn for our next edition in the Bosl-Matinee series:

As we look ahead to our second Frühlings-Matinee this Sunday, Anna Beke’s latest article invites us to see WALTZING THROUGH —created with Bachelor 1 & 2 students of the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich—as a powerful dialogue between tradition and transformation, where elegance begins to crack and hidden tensions surface.

At its core lies a compelling focus on female authorship in dance, tracing a line from early modern pioneers like Isadora Duncan to contemporary voices shaping the stage today.

This new creation becomes a living embodiment of these ideas—where young artists engage with history while shaping their own artistic voice.

…and what a morning indeed!! Congratulations to everyone involved onstage this morning and thank you to our wonderful audience who came to share in the first of our Spring Matinees!

In a program that truly has something for all, the audience went wild for the talented dancers of the Bayerisches Junior Ballett München and students of the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.

To all of the choreographers, dancers, ballet masters, coaches, teachers, designers and everyone backstage, we are in debt to the time and energy you have contributed to bring this morning’s Matinee to the stage.

For anyone that missed this morning’s performance, we will return to the Nationaltheater Stage on 29th March for the second performance in our Spring Matinee series!

Today we’re diving into the rehearsal process for Craig Davidson’s new work for the students of the Ballet Academy of the University for Music and Performing Arts Munich.

FRAMED FREEDOM explores the tension between structure and freedom, posing the question of whether freedom can exist without limitation. The new ballet examines how individuals move, behave, and relate to one another within systems. These frameworks shape action and interaction, while simultaneously opening up spaces for autonomy. Rather than viewing limitation as an obstacle, the work reveals how freedom can emerge through a conscious engagement with constraint—found in the space between structure and expression.

Following FRAMED FREEDOM’s premiere at the 10th Biennale for Dance Education at the State Ballet School Berlin earlier this year, we look forward to presenting this exciting new work at the first of our Spring Matinee’s this coming weekend!

We are pleased to introduce choreographer Craig Davidson, who has created FRAMED FREEDOM for the students of the Ballet Academy of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. Following its first performance recently at the Biennale Tanzausbildung in Berlin, we look forward to presenting the Munich premiere at the first of our Spring Matinees this weekend.

Originally from Australia and now based in Berlin, Davidson trained at the New Zealand School of Dance and enjoyed an international performing career with companies including the Finnish National Ballet, Royal Ballet of Flanders and Semperoper Ballett. He was awarded Dance Europe’s Critic’s Choice Award for “Most Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer” for his role in «Impressing the Czar» by William Forsythe.

As a choreographer, Davidson has created world premieres for companies across Europe, Australia and the United States, and his works are performed internationally. In the 2025/26 season, he will create new works for Ballet Nacional Sodre and other leading institutions, while his acclaimed piece Entropy continues its successful run with the Slovakian National Ballet.”

With “La Valse”, Maurice Ravel created one of his most enigmatic works—a vision of a waltz collapsing under its own brilliance. Written in the aftermath of World War I, the piece shimmers between the glittering sophistication of the Belle Époque and the quiet unease of a society marked by conflict. Swirling motifs and sudden harmonic shifts hint at inevitability: vitality entwined with mortality, celebration shadowed by menace.

In her new creation for the Bachelor students of the Ballet Academy of the University for Music and Performing Arts Munich, Lida Doumouliaka draws directly on this powerful duality. Inspired by Ravel’s score, she brings to the stage a contemporary—almost paradoxically “noble”—waltz. On the surface, it remains allegro and refined; beneath it unfolds a choreography that embodies both the musical structure and the vivid, unsettling imagery it evokes.

Grace and chaos, form and fracture: Doumouliaka transforms the waltz into a contemporary reflection on human fragility, social pressure, and the inexorable passage of time.

We are delighted to welcome Lida Doumouliaka as the creator of a new ballet for the students of the Ballett-Akademie der Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, premiering at our upcoming Spring Matinees at the Nationaltheater München.

Born in Athens in 1994, Doumouliaka is a choreographer, dancer, and musician whose work centers on embodying musical scores and creating worlds where music and dance coexist. A graduate of the Greek National School of Dance, Lida performed with the Hellenic Dance Company in works by artists including Akram Khan and Martha Graham, while also earning diplomas in music theory, composition, and piano.

Now based in Zurich, where Lida completed her Master’s at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, she has created works for institutions such as Luzerner Theater and Malpaso Dance Company. In 2024, Lida won First Prize (“Carte Blanche”) at Festival Incidanse for her short piece «Chase the Rabbit».
Stay tuned as we dive into the Lida’s rehearsals with the students tomorrow!

“Because for him, life was dancing — and nothing else. Talent, luck, and ambition - as he said recently - make a successful dancer.”

On this day 79 years ago, Heinz Bosl, the namesake of our foundation, was born.
Heinz Bosl was one of the few exceptional talents who seemed blessed with every gift and advantage. He himself said that a dancer needs three things to achieve perfection: talent, hard work, and luck. He embodied everything an outstanding dancer needs: beauty and elegance, technique and diligence, humanity and expressiveness.

His life ended at only 28 years of age, yet the memory of him remains alive - not least thanks to the initiative of his partner, Konstanze Vernon. Visit our website to learn more about his life: “Who was Heinz Bosl?” (heinz-bosl-stiftung.de/wer-war-heinz-bosl)
We are also sharing an obituary (“Arm, wer ihn nicht tanzen sah“) of the Munich star dancer, published by culture journalist Karsten Peters in the Münchner Abendzeitung in June 1975.
