Grey primer with a few highlights applied – ready for the yellow paint to be sprayed onto the wings.

Later, I discovered that some of the surface details hadn’t been scribed deeply enough to remain visible after several layers of paint. 🤷🏼‍♂️

There are still a few modifications to make: the air intake on top of the cowling, the exhaust pipes, the windows on the underside, and the cooler intakes beneath the wings. I’m not sure why, but I added those later. I think I just couldn’t wait to put paint on this beautiful aircraft 😅🤷🏼‍♂️

It took me several layers of primer and a lot of patience to scribe the F4F-3 panel lines. I learned a few lessons along the way.

Some lines and rivets were too soft to stay visible after the primer, while others turned out quite well. In the end, the most important lesson was this: it’s possible, and not as hard as expected, once you develop some “feeling” for it.

As usual, it may just need some practice 🤷🏼‍♂️😅
Who would have thought that?

I colorised some plans to highlight the differences between the Fm2 and the F4F-3. The plastic parts are the original Sweet Fm-2 kit parts before the conversion. In the Plans blue is the Fm-2, green the F4F-3. Quite some difference even at first sight, if you highlight it this way…

There’s one very popular aircraft still missing in 1/144 scale: the F4F. There are hundreds of great historical references for the interwar and early-war era. We already have a fantastic FM-2 by Sweet, but converting it into an F4F — especially a -3 — is far from a minor modification. It means filling all the wing panel lines and rescribing them from scratch, changing the shape of the rudder, modifying the cowling… in a nutshell: it’s fun 🤩

My friend Mike @ Harristotle's Miniatures was a pioneer of 1/144 F4F conversions 😉 It took me years before I finally dared to follow 😊

I like the all dark sea blue Corsairs. The dark glossy colour makes it hard to see any details inside the wheel bays. I made little modifications on the landing gear. But a few where necessary.

I did that once before… but in 1/144 scale. In 144 scale it took me maybe an hour from a closed wing to a open gun bay. And it looked very detailed. In 48 scale it took me a few hours, even with many things already being in the kit, and it looks pretty mediocre. Why does everyone believe 48 is the easier scale???

With little modifications I used the 1/48 hobbyboss kit engine for the dash 4 Corsair. Looks not too bad, but honestly, as much as this was a fun little side story, I’m having a hard time finding a relation of detail to simplification that feels „right“. That’s where i realised how much I know „my scale“ and how much I don’t know this one. It’s the same hobby, but in a way it’s not 😅🤷🏼‍♂️

It seems to be necessary to continue posting, before my phone starts to explode from all the unshared photos. I’ll try to keep it chronologically.

The thing with continuity and me is that every time we date, we’re both convinced it’s love. But of course, we both have full calendars, and it’s hard to find an empty slot for the next date. And we always forget exchanging numbers … 🤷🏼‍♂️.

It’s months ago when I worked on the 1/48 scale F4U-4 and I not even shared more than one side of the cockpit. 🙄 now here’s the other side!
