Towards a Roma Project Space Venice

We warmly thank all speakers, participants, partners, and guests who joined us, both in person in Venice and online, for the conference *Towards a Roma Project Space Venice*, held on 22 October 2026 at the European Cultural Centre. European Cultural Centre Italy

It was an inspiring afternoon, bringing together diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas on the future of Romani contemporary art, cultural representation, and the importance of establishing a permanent Roma Project Space in Venice.

Our special thanks go to Romani Rose, Dr. Anna Mirga-Kruszelnicka, André Raatzsch, Dijana Pavlović, Beatrice Ferraboschi, Ivor Stodolsky, Marita Muukkonen, Miguel Ángel Vargas Rubio, and Dovrat Meron (Venezia Contemporanea), as well as the Francesca Scorsino (UNAR), for their valuable contributions and commitment to this important dialogue.

We also extend our gratitude to Moritz Pankok, Matthias Koch, and Luna De Rosa from the Kai Dikhas Foundation, and to everyone who participated in the discussions, whether in Venice or remotely.

The conversations highlighted the importance of creating a shared and sustainable space for Romani artistic expression, cultural exchange, and collaboration, building upon the history of Romani participation in the Venice Biennale while opening new possibilities for the future.

We look forward to continuing this collective effort and working together towards making the Roma Project Space Venice a reality.

TOWARDS A ROMA PROJECT SPACE VENICE

Conference Programme | 22 October 2026

Building on the history of Roma Pavilions at the Venice Biennale and the artistic and political initiatives of recent decades, the conference aims to take a further step towards establishing a Roma Project Space Venice — a space for artistic exchange, collaboration, visibility and long-term cultural presence.

The programme will open with contributions from Moritz Pankok and Matthias Koch, followed by Dr. Anna Mirga-Kruszelnicka (ERIAC - ), who will reflect on the history of Romani contemporary art at the Venice Biennale between 2007 and 2022.

Moritz Pankok and Luna De Rosa will present RʳOMA LEPANTO (2024), accompanied by a screening of the performance video, while André Raatzsch will revisit the 2024 conference and its proposal for a Roma Project Space Venice.

We are pleased to welcome contributions from UNAR – Italian National Office Against Racial Discrimination, Dijana Pavlović .dijana.3 , Beatrice Ferraboschi , Ivor Stodolsky and Marita Muukkonen (Artists at Risk), Miguel Ángel Vargas Rubio .angel_vargas , and Dovrat Meron (Venezia Contemporanea .contemporanea ).

The afternoon will conclude with an open discussion and the foundation of an Alliance for the Roma Project Space Venice, introduced by Romani Rose, Chairman of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma.

TOWARDS A ROMA PROJECT SPACE VENICE

At a moment when the Venice Biennale faces a profound institutional crisis, the limitations of an international art system organised around nation states are increasingly being questioned.

We would like to acknowledge the pioneering contributions of the 1st Roma Pavilion (Paradise Lost, 2007), curated by Tímea Junghaus , and the 2nd Roma Pavilion (Call the Witness, 2011), curated by Maria Hlavajova, based on an idea by Suzana Milevska.

These initiatives were followed by FUTUROMA (2019), curated by Daniel Baker , and The Abduction from the Seraglio / Roma Women: Performative Strategies of Resistance (2022), curated by Ilina Schileru , both presented with the involvement of ERIAC

Building on this legacy and the conversations renewed during RʳOMA LEPANTO (2024), organised by Kai Dikhas Foundation with the support of ERIAC, we invite artists, curators, cultural organisations and institutions to discuss the future of Roma contemporary art in Venice.

The meeting "Towards a Roma Project Space Venice" proposes a sustained Roma presence beyond the traditional system of national pavilions, including the creation of an Alliance for a Roma Project Space Venice, working towards a collective intervention at the 2028 Venice Biennale.

Vielen Dank an alle, die gestern bei den Humanistischen Dialogen in der Stiftung Kai Dikhas dabei waren!

Ein besonderer Dank gilt Naomi Henkel-Guembel, die ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen und Gedanken zum antisemitischen Anschlag in Halle 2019 mit uns geteilt hat. Ebenso danken wir Hanan Liguori und Manuela Schmidt für ihre wertvollen Beiträge zu diesem wichtigen Gespräch.

Unter dem Titel „Zwei Tage im Oktober. Wenn ein Gedenken das andere überlagert“ ging es um Antisemitismus, Rassismus, Erinnerungskultur und Solidarität – und darum, wie wichtig es ist, miteinander im Gespräch zu bleiben.

Unser herzlicher Dank gilt auch der Humanistischen Akademie Berlin-Brandenburg für die Zusammenarbeit sowie allen Gästen für ihr Interesse, ihre Fragen und den offenen Austausch.

Am 14. Oktober 2026 ist die Stiftung Kai Dikhas Gastgeberin der Humanistischen Dialoge der Humanistischen Akademie Berlin-Brandenburg .

Der Abend beginnt um 18 Uhr mit einer Führung durch unsere aktuelle Ausstellung METAMORPHOSE DES DENKENS, die anlässlich des 15-jährigen Bestehens von Kai Dikhas präsentiert wird.

Um 19 Uhr folgt das öffentliche Gespräch:

„Zwei Tage im Oktober. Wenn ein Gedenken das andere überlagert“

Sieben Jahre nach dem antisemitischen Anschlag auf die Synagoge in Halle sprechen Manuela Schmidt, Präsidentin des Humanistischen Verbandes Berlin-Brandenburg, und Hanan Liguori, Initiatorin von Salam/Shalom, mit Naomi Henkel-Guembel, die den Anschlag am 9. Oktober 2019 selbst in der Synagoge erlebte.

Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Verbindungen zwischen Antisemitismus und Rassismus sowie die Frage, warum diese Kämpfe im öffentlichen Diskurs zunehmend gegeneinander ausgespielt werden.

HUMANISTISCHE DIALOGE in der Stiftung Kai Dikhas

Am 14. Oktober ist die Stiftung Kai Dikhas Gastgeberin der Humanistischen Dialoge der Humanistischen Akademie Berlin-Brandenburg.

Sieben Jahre nach dem antisemitischen Anschlag auf die Synagoge in Halle an Yom Kippur 2019 widmet sich der Abend dem Verhältnis von Antisemitismus und Rassismus und der Frage, wie diese Kämpfe im öffentlichen Diskurs zunehmend gegeneinander ausgespielt werden.

Unter dem Titel „Zwei Tage im Oktober. Wenn ein Gedenken das andere überlagert“ sprechen Manuela Schmidt, Präsidentin des Humanistischen Verbandes Berlin-Brandenburg, und Hanan Liguori, Initiatorin von Salam/Shalom, mit Naomi Henkel-Guembel, die sich am 9. Oktober 2019 während des Anschlags selbst in der Synagoge in Halle befand.

Der Abend beginnt um 18 Uhr mit einer Einführung in unsere aktuelle Ausstellung „Metamorphose des Denkens“. Um 19 Uhr folgt das öffentliche Gespräch.

New acquisition for Collection Kai Dikhas: The rare publication of the theatre piece „Rien qu“ in Homme“ by Max Deauville, illustrated by Helios Gómez in 1927 in Brussels. It has been published in 1928 L‘Equerre, Société Coopérative d‘Edition et de Propagande Intelectuelle. Helios during his time in Brussels has been linked to L‘Equerre and the group „7Arts“, so again he got in touch with the Avantgarde of Europe of his time. This edition is signed by the author.

FREEDOM OF ART
Filmvorführung und Künstlergespräch mit Christophoros Katsadiotis. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung METAMORPHOSE DES DENKENS zum 15jährigen Bestehen von Kai Dikhas.

Was bedeutet Freiheit der Kunst, wenn künstlerischer Ausdruck zum Ziel politischer Intervention oder sogar physischer Angriffe wird? Wo endet Provokation – und wer entscheidet darüber?
Mit Freedom of Art lädt die Stiftung Kai Dikhas zu einem Abend über künstlerische Freiheit und die Rolle der Kunst in aktuellen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Debatten ein.

Im Mittelpunkt steht der griechische Künstler Christophoros Katsadiotis .katsadiotis , dessen Praxis Druckgrafik, Collage und Bewegtbild verbindet und sich mit Gesellschaft, Religion und menschlicher Existenz auseinandersetzt.

Der Abend beginnt mit "The Engraver" (2025), einem Dokumentarfilm von Sissy Morfi . Der Dokumentarfilm wurde auf dem 28. TiDF Thessaloniki Internationalen Dokumentarfilm Festival gezeigt. Der Film begleitet Katsadiotis’ künstlerische Praxis und thematisiert auch die Beschädigung seiner in der Nationalgalerie in Athen ausgestellten Werke durch ein Mitglied des griechischen Parlaments – ein Ereignis, das eine breite Debatte über Kunstfreiheit auslöste.

Im Anschluss an die Filmvorführung spricht Christophoros Katsadiotis mit Moritz Pankok , Kurator der aktuellen Ausstellung Metamorphose des Denkens, über den Film, Katsadiotis’ künstlerische Praxis und die Frage: Wie kann Kunst ein Raum für Widerspruch, Widerstand und kritisches Denken bleiben?

Wir freuen uns, zwei Werke von Henrik Kállai neu in der Sammlung Kai Dikhas begrüßen zu dürfen:

Henrik Kállai ist ein ungarischer Romani-Künstler, dessen expressive Malerei sich zwischen Porträt, Figuration und psychologisch aufgeladenen, oft traumartigen Bildwelten bewegt. Seine Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch intensive Farben, einen gestischen Pinselduktus und Figuren aus, die aus der malerischen Oberfläche hervorzutreten und zugleich wieder in ihr zu verschwinden scheinen.

Kállai ist seit vielen Jahren mit Kai Dikhas verbunden, und seine Arbeiten wurden bereits in verschiedenen Ausstellungen der Galerie und Stiftung präsentiert.

Mit diesen beiden Neuzugängen erweitert die Sammlung Kai Dikhas ihre kontinuierliche Dokumentation und Bewahrung zeitgenössischer künstlerischer Positionen von Sinti* und Roma*.

We are pleased to welcome two works by Henrik Kállai into the collection of the Kai Dikhas Foundation:

Henrik Kállai is a Hungarian Romani artist whose expressive painting moves between portraiture, figuration and psychologically charged, often dreamlike imagery. His works are characterised by intense colour, gestural brushwork and figures that seem to emerge from—and dissolve into—the painted surface. Kállai has been connected to Kai Dikhas for many years, and his works have been presented in several exhibitions of the Foundation and Gallery.

With these two acquisitions, the Kai Dikhas Collection continues to expand its documentation and preservation of contemporary artistic positions by Sinti* and Roma* artists. Today, the collection comprises more than 320 works across painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, print and digital art.
