20.06.2026☀️ Kieler Woche Eröffnungsempfang

The AGSH is beyond grateful to have celebrated the opening of KiWo2026 in style at the City Hall! We were honored to be there supporting transatlantic values and exchange on a night filled with exciting moments and interesting guests. Kieler Woche brings the whole world to Kiel, and we love being a part of the celebration!

We were especially grateful to hear all the speakers: Samet Yilmaz Daniel Günther Bundespräsident Steinmeier Kristina Herbst and even to get a photo with the Ministerpräsident of Schleswig-Holstein!

Yesterday we welcomed Dr. Bailey Thomas and Dr. Helen Gibson for a talk on Juneteenth, the day that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Dr. Thomas and Dr. Gibson gave a talk that traced the history of Juneteenth through to present day, drawing on a mix of personal stories and academic engagement with the historical, cultural and political context of the holiday. Attendees then had the chance to ask the speakers more in-depth questions about the topic, as well as their own research and teaching experiences

Dr. Thomas and Dr. Gibson are currently working together on a research project called "Between Empire and Exile: African-American Though and the German Colonial Imagination," which is funded by the Foundation on German-American Academic Relations.

A post that's a bit overdue, but better late than never!

On 23. May, the AGSH participated in Tag der Offenen Vereine, an initiative of the nettekieler Ehrenamtsbüro Ehrenamtsbüro. We were very happy to receive a visit from Samet Yilmaz Dr. Samet Yilmaz and Bundestagsabgeordnete Luise Amtsberg , who spent some time with us talking about the importance of democratic values and the transatlantic relationship.

Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by for this wonderful event!

🗓 Thursday, 18. June 2026
📍 Hörsaal B, Audimax der CAU

Join us for a guest lecture from Professors K. Bailey Thomas and Helen Gibson on the topic, "Juneteenth: Memory, Freedom and Censored History"! Juneteenth has been a federal holiday in the US since only 2021, but it's been celebrated for much longer as the day the final enslaved people were freed after the American Civil War. Come learn about its history, context, and current status in the US.

This event is co-sponsored by the and the English Department of the CAU, with special thanks to the Stiftung Deutsch-Amerikanische Wissenshaftsbeziehungen, which is funding Dr. Thomas' and Dr. Gibson's research in Berlin.

An incredible sold-out evening at Literaturhaus Schleswig-Holstein with Rachel Khong , author of "Real Americans".

Alongside German readings by the fantastic , we had the opportunity to hear Rachel Khong reflect on her writing process, the real-life experiences that shaped the novel, and how writing allows her to explore questions more deeply—even if it can't provide the answers.

A huge thank you to Rachel Khong and the Literaturhaus SH for such a fantastic and memorable evening!
