ruangrupa, an artist collective from Jakarta, Indonesia, is the Artistic Direction of documenta fifteen, taking place from June 18 to September 25, 2022 in Kassel.
documenta was established in 1955. In its meanwhile 14 editions it has followed very different curatorial concepts which have influenced the art world as well as initiated general discussions in politics and society. Held every five years documenta is today known as one of the most renowned exhibitions of contemporary art.
ruangrupa’s central curatorial approach for documenta fifteen is based on the principles of collectivity, resource building, and equal sharing.
ruangrupa aims to appeal not just to an art audience but to a variety of communities, and to promote local commitment and participation. Their approach is based on an international network of local, community-based art organizations and can be outlined by the Indonesian terms Lumbung.
