Looking back at 100 days of documenta fifteen, we remember songs, conversations, workshops, artworks, tea ceremonies, performances, friendships, shared cooking and food, screenings, and, of course, nongkrong! We will keep these memories while documenta fifteen is over and lumbung continues.

100 days of exhibition are behind us! A huge thank you to all the visitors, artists, collectives, contributors, colleagues, the Kassel ekosistem, friends, and lumbung family! 💜🧡

1,500 artists at 32 exhibition venues, over 1,700 events, 3 Meydan weekends, more than 3,500 Solidarity tickets, 375,000 Euro in donations for sustainability projects, 738,000 visitors—what a journey it has been!

documenta fifteen is now closed, but the lumbung practice will live on after the 100 exhibition days. 💫

100 Ausstellungstage liegen hinter uns! Ein riesiges Dankeschön an alle Besucher*innen, Künstler*innen, Kollektive, Mitwirkenden, Kolleg*innen, das Kassel Ekosisten, alle Freund*innen und die lumbung Familie! 💜🧡

1.500 Künstler*innen in 31 Ausstellungsorten, über 1.700 Veranstaltungen, 3 Meydan-Wochenenden, über 3.500 Soli-Ticktes, 375.000 Euro Spenden für nachhaltige Projekte, 738.000 Besucher*innen – was war das für eine Reise!

Die documenta fifteen ist nun zu Ende, aber die lumbung-Praxis wird nach den 100 Ausstellungstagen weiterleben. 💫

Land is one of the most fundamental approaches to the lumbung Economy. Many lumbung members and lumbung artists are confronted with issues such as land grabbing, climate injustice, or lack of resources to acquire land, which harms their sustainability and their autonomous artistic practices. Others work with land that is restituted and questions of how to recreate collective imaginary around land.

Looking into holistic models for land to be cultivated, collectively owned, or to thrive from human and non-human perspectives, the working group lumbung Land experiments with land development models combining culture, agriculture, and ecology. Also, they are developing ways to collectively “invest” in specific land development projects by members.

The working group lumbung Land is a collaboration between lumbung members and lumbung artists INLAND, Jatiwangi art Factory, Le 18, La Intermundial Holobiente, MADEYOULOOK, Marwa Arsanios, Subversive Film, Serigrafistas Q***r, Wajukuu Art Project, and more. The group continues to work after the end of the duration of documenta fifteen.

Land (im Sinne von Grund und Boden) ist einer der grundlegendsten Denkansätze für die lumbung Economy. Da viele lumbung member und lumbung-Künstler*innen mit Problemen des Landraubs, der Klimagerechtigkeit oder fehlender Mittel für den Erwerb von Grundstücken konfrontiert sind, werden ihre Nachhaltigkeit sowie ihre autonome künstlerische Praxis beeinträchtigt. Andere beschäftigen sich mit Land, das restituiert wurde, und mit der Neuschöpfung einer kollektiven Vorstellung von Land.

Die Working Group lumbung Land sucht nach ganzheitlichen Modellen für die Bewirtschaftung, den kollektiven Besitz oder das Gedeihen von Land aus menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Perspektive. Sie erprobt dabei Modelle der Landentwicklung, welche Kultur, Landwirtschaft und Ökologie verbinden. Außerdem entwickeln ihre Mitglieder Möglichkeiten, kollektiv in ihre eigenen Projekte zur Landentwicklung zu „investieren“.

At documenta fifteen, storyteller and artist Agus Nur Amal PMTOH presents videos and installations created with everyday objects. These objects reflect his storytelling practice and are embellished through narrative and musical performances based on a Sundanese life principle. Central to his storytelling is the joy of just being and interacting with many people: remembering the past, thinking about the present, and speculating about futures.

Der Geschichtenerzähler und Künstler Agus Nur Amal PMTOH präsentiert auf der documenta fifteen Videos und Installationen, die er mithilfe von Alltagsgegenständen hergestellt hat. Diese Objekte spiegeln seine Praxis des Geschichtenerzählens wider und werden zusätzlich durch musikalische Darbietungen, die auf dem sundanesischen Lebensprizip Tri Tangtu beruhen, untermalt. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Geschichten steht meist die Interaktion mit vielen Menschen: Gemeinsam erinnern sie sich an die Vergangenheit, denken über die Gegenwart nach und spekulieren über die Zukunft.

Has the "Floating System for Snails" ever passed you on the Fulda? 🐌

Through the “migration” journey of Giant African Snails, lumbung artist Chang En-Man unveils the correlation between the history of imperialism and the modernization of the Indigenous peoples in her home country Taiwan. For her documenta fifteen contribution “Floating System for Snails” Chang recreates the boathouse and waiting room of the Bootsverleih Ahoi from painted glass in the shape of mulberry leaves and sets it afloat on the river Fulda. The waiting room contains an archival display examining the collection of snails.

Ist das „Floating System for Snails“ schonmal auf der Fulda an euch vorbeigefahren? 🐌

Anhand der „Migration“ der Großen Achatschnecke legt die lumbung-Künstlerin Chang En-Man die Beziehung der Geschichte des Imperialismus zu Modernisierungsprozessen innerhalb der Indigenen Bevölkerung Taiwans frei.
Für ihren Beitrag zur documenta fifteen „Floating System for Snails“ fertigte Chang das Haus und den Warteraum des Bootsverleih Ahoi aus bemaltem Glas in Form von Maulbeerblättern nach und lässt es auf der Fulda in See stechen. Im Bootshaus selbst geht es um Legenden, die von mündlichen Überlieferungen inspiriert sind. Der Warteraum enthält eine Archivausstellung, in der die Schneckensammlung untersucht wird.

Experimentation with sustainable economies is at the heart of documenta fifteen. Various working groups by lumbung members and lumbung artists try out concrete practices in order to enable a collective arts economy that is anchored in the local and based on lumbung values. From wider discussions in a working group called lumbung Economy, several other groups have emerged—one of them lumbung Currency.

lumbung Currency looks to strengthen and connect the various community currencies that are being built by four of the lumbung members:

💫BeeCoin by ZK/U - Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik
BeeDAO is an organization of human and nonhuman agents that allows for interspecies democracy, wealth sharing, and knowledge creation. The aim of the organization is to secure and improve the well-being of bees worldwide.

💫Cheesecoin by
The Cheesecoin was invented as a fictional currency to fund a campaign against a Reality TV company that appropriated the name of INLAND’s project and invaded their area in 2017. The currency follows the cheese standard of INLAND, meaning that the collective issues a certain number of Cheesecoins based on the annual amount of cheese produced.

💫Dayra by The Question of Funding
The economic model Dayra uses blockchain technology for circulating communal economic value. The model is based on the premise that individuals, as well as local businesses and organizations that lack financial resources, nevertheless have resources (material, physical, or intellectual) and knowledge.

💫Jalar by Gudskul
Members of the platform Temujalar.art earn and collect digital points called Jalar for their Jalar Collective Wallet. They generate Jalar by contributing with resources or activities to the platform. They can spend them to join workshops and virtual events, or to build a collective space.

Das Experimentieren mit nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsformen ist das Herzstück der documenta fifteen. In verschiedenen Working Groups erproben die lumbung member und lumbung-Künstler*innen konkrete Vorgehensweisen, um eine kollektive künstlerische Ökonomie zu schaffen, die im Lokalen verankert ist und auf den lumbung-Werten aufbaut. Die Cheesecoin wurde ursprünglich als fiktive Währung zur Finanzierung einer Kampagne gegen eine Fernsehproduktionsfirma ins Leben gerufen. Basierend auf der jährlichen Menge selbst produzierten Käses gibt INLAND eine bestimmte Anzahl von Cheesecoins heraus.

💫Dayra von The Question of Funding
Das Wirtschaftsmodell Dayra nutzt Blockchain-Technologie für die Zirkulation gemeinsamen wirtschaftlichen Werts. Das Modell geht von der Prämisse aus, dass Einzelpersonen, aber auch lokale Betriebe und Organisationen, die keine finanziellen Mittel haben, trotzdem über Ressourcen (materiell, physisch oder geistig) sowie über Wissen verfügen.

💫Jalar von Gudskul
Die Mitglieder der Plattform Temujalar.art verdienen und sammeln digitale Punkte, die Jalar genannt werden, für ihre kollektive Jalar-Geldbörse. Sie generieren Jalar, indem sie mit Ressourcen oder Aktivitäten zur Plattform beitragen. Die Mitglieder können diese digitalen Währungspunkte ausgeben, um an Workshops und virtuellen Veranstaltungen teilzunehmen oder um einen kollektiven Raum zu schaffen.

MADEYOULOOK is a Johannesburg-based interdisciplinary artist collaboration between Molemo Moiloa and Nare Mokgotho. The works of MADEYOULOOK take as their point of departure everyday Black practices that have either been historically overlooked or deemed inconsequential.

For documenta fifteen, MADEYOULOOK completely transformed the former ballroom of Hotel Hessenland and present a floor installation and sound work, titled “Mafolofolo”. The historical tracking in the work deals with a cycle of displacement and return. The sound installation references popular African resistance songs against oppression and for liberation, particularly of the land.

MADEYOULOOK ist eine interdisziplinäre Johannesburger Kooperation zwischen Molemo Moiloa und Nare Mokgotho. Ihre Arbeiten gehen von alltäglichen Schwarzen Praktiken aus, die historisch entweder übersehen oder als unbedeutend erachtet wurden.

Für die documenta fifteen hat MADEYOULOOK den ehemaligen Ballsaal des Hotels Hessenland komplett umgestaltet und präsentiert eine Bodeninstallation und Klangarbeit mit dem Titel „Mafolofolo“. Die historische Spurensuche in der Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einem Zyklus von Vertreibung und Rückkehr. Die Klanginstallation bezieht sich auf populäre afrikanische Lieder des Widerstands gegen Unterdrückung und für die Befreiung, insbesondere des Landes.

Economic experimentation is at the heart of the documenta fifteen process. The aim is to build a long term lumbung: a barn of collective resources that may sustain collaborations beyond documenta fifteen. Resources range from art, knowledge, networks and care, to space, equipment and money.

The collective art economy is based on lumbung values such as generosity, regeneration, local anchoring and humor. Since October 2020 an economy working group, consisting of lumbung inter-lokal members, ruangrupa, and the Artistic Team, has discussed what this collective economy entails.

lumbung Kios and lumbung Gallery are examples of models of lumbung economy. Both develop models for the so-called transvestment of resources from the capitalist arts market to an economy based on lumbung values, in order to free the resources in the common pot from the restrictions put to them by the market, government or funders.

Die Erprobung neuer Wirtschaftsmodelle steht im Zentrum des Arbeitsprozesses der documenta fifteen.
Das Ziel ist es, einen langfristigen lumbung aufzubauen: ein Speicher kollektiver Ressourcen zur nachhaltigen Stärkung von Kollaborationen über die documenta fifteen hinaus. Diese Ressourcen reichen von Kunst, Wissen, Netzwerken und Fürsorge bis hin zu Raum, Equipment und Geld.

Die neue, kollektive Kunstökonomie beruht auf lumbung-Werten wie Großzügigkeit, Regeneration, lokale Verankerung und Humor. Seit Oktober 2020 diskutiert eine Working Group Wirtschaft, bestehend aus lumbung member, ruangrupa und dem Künstlerischen Team, wie eine solche kollektive Ökonomie aussehen könnte.

lumbung Kios und lumbung Gallery sind Beispiele der lumbung-Wirtschaft. Beide entwickeln Modelle für ein sogenanntes Transvestment von Ressourcen von kapitalistischen Kunstmärkten hin in eine Ökonomie, die auf den lumbung-Werten basiert. Darüber hinaus sollen die im gemeinsamen Topf gelagerten Ressourcen von Zwängen befreit werden, die ihnen der Markt, Regierungen oder Geldgeber*innen auferlegen.

If you arrive in Kassel at Hauptbahnhof, you can visit the first exhibition directly on site—the collective Jimmie Durham & a stick in the forest displays their works at KAZimKuba.

Jimmie Durham (1940–2021) was an artist, poet, and writer who was politically active in the American civil rights movement and co–founder and chairman of the International Indian Treaty Council at the United Nations, where his and others’ work led to the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The artist passed away during the preparation period of documenta fifteen on November 17, 2021.

Jimmie Durham & A Stick in the Forest by the Side of the Road is a collective that came about from the idea of Jimmie Durham to gather together a group of artists to form “a community on the road” and to contribute in collaboration with him to documenta fifteen. On his last night, Durham said, “What a world we live in, a stick in the forest.”
After his death, the collective consisting of Bev Koski, Elisa Strinna, Hamza Badran, Iain Chambers, Joen Vedel, Jone Kvie, Maria Thereza Alves, and Wilma Lukatsch decided to make his absence part of the working process.
In their exhibition the eight individuals use different ideas of knowledge to relate to different life forms and display artifacts Jimmie Durham collected relating to physical theories about the expansion of the universe.

Wenn du in Kassel am Hauptbahnhof ankommst, kannst du die erste Ausstellung direkt vor Ort besuchen – das Kollektiv Jimmie Durham & a stick in the forest zeigt seine Werke im KAZimKuba.

Jimmie Durham (1940-2021) war ein Künstler, Dichter und Schriftsteller, der sich politisch in der amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung engagierte und Mitbegründer und Vorsitzender des International Indian Treaty Council bei den Vereinten Nationen war, wo seine und die Arbeit anderer zu der Erklärung über die Rechte der indigenen Völker führte.
Der Künstler verstarb während der Vorbereitungszeit der documenta fifteen am 17. November 2021.

Jimmie Durham & A Stick in the Forest by the Side of the Road ist ein Kollektiv, das aus der Idee von Jimmie Durham entstanden ist, eine Gruppe von Künstler*innen zu versammeln und in Zusammenarbeit mit ihm zur documenta fifteen beizutragen. Am letzten Abend seines Lebens sagte Jimmie Durham: „Was für eine wunderbare Welt – ein Stock im Wald“. Nach seinem Tod beschloss das Kollektiv, bestehend aus Bev Koski, Elisa Strinna, Hamza Badran, Iain Chambers, Joen Vedel, Jone Kvie, Maria Thereza Alves und Wilma Lukatsch, seine Abwesenheit zum Teil des Arbeitsprozesses zu machen.
In ihrer Ausstellung verwenden die acht Individuen unterschiedliche Vorstellungen von Wissen über verschiedene Lebensformen und zeigen Artefakte, die Jimmie Durham im Zusammenhang mit physikalischen Theorien über die Expansion des Universums gesammelt hat.

Bei der Online–Führung zu ruangrupas kuratorischer Praxis auf der documenta fifteen werden anhand von 7 lateinamerikanischen Werken, die in der Ausstellung zu sehen sind, Ansätze zu kollektiver Praxis nach den Werten von lumbung untersucht.

🔦 Descending the stairs to the lower floor of Hübner areal, you can immerse yourself in Amol K Patil's exhibition space.
For his contribution to documenta fifteen, he draws the visitors into journeys within the city of his childhood Mumbai. He invites collaboration across time by reflecting and continuing visions and practices of his father and grandfather, who dealt in different artistic practices with the dilemma of living in the city as a migrant.

🔦 Wenn ihr die Treppe in das Untergeschoss des Hübner–Areals hinuntergeht, gelangt ihr in den außergewöhnlich gestalteten Ausstellungsbereich von Amol K Patil.
Bei der documenta fifteen nimmt Patil die Besucher*innen auf eine Reise durch die Stadt seiner Kindheit Mumbai mit. Außerdem lädt er zur Zusammenarbeit über die Zeiten hinweg ein, indem er Visionen und künstlerische Ausdrucksformen seines Vaters und Großvaters aufgreift und weiterführt, die beide auf verschiedene Weisen das Dilemma verarbeitet haben, als Migrant*innen in der Großstadt zu leben.
