www.documenta14.de In 1955, ten years after the end of the Second World War, the first documenta was organized in Kassel—an exhibition of Western European modern art initiated by a group of art enth usiasts led by artist, art professor, and curator Arnold Bode (1900–77).

Over the course of the previous thirteen iterations of documenta, the exhibition has been evolving constantly to become a place of major debates on contemporary culture as well as addressing its current sociopolitical contexts. Artistic Director Adam Szymczyk has proposed a two-fold structure, reflected in the working title Learning from Athens, as the guiding principle for documenta 14. In 2017,

FINAL CUT

Final Cut is a documenta 14 film program that takes place at Filmladen Kassel, a small arthouse cinema, during the final week of the exhibition. Daily from September 11–17, beginning at 8:30 pm, it presents a selection of riveting yet seldom-seen films compiled by Artistic Director Adam Szymczyk.

Today 8.30pm: *Muriel ou le temps d'un retour (Muriel or the Time of Return)* by Alain Resnais

A middle-aged woman, living with her stepson, reunites with an old flame, and both grow increasingly haunted by their own past. Meanwhile, the stepson, a former soldier, is troubled by the memory of a girl named Muriel who he met while deployed in the Algerian War.

SOUTH AS A STATE OF MIND
Now online: Issue #9 [documenta 14 #4]

Antonin Artaud once wrote: “There aren’t enough magazines, or if you will, all existing magazines are useless. We are appearing because we believe we are responding to something. We are real. This excuses us from being necessary. There should be as many magazines as there are valid states of mind.”

Over the past year, we have repeatedly found ourselves reaching for books and texts about violence. Perhaps with the urge to understand that which swells like waves around us, threatening to take us under in all its manifold, rising forms: economic violence, linguistic violence, nationalistic violen...

Iver Jåks (1932–2007)

Deliberately moving between the aesthetics and practices of duodji (traditional Sámi handicrafts) and European Modernism, Jåks’s sculptures often emphasize the cycles and processes of nature.

Iver Jåks was born in Karasjok in northern Norway and is one of the most influential artists from the region. His unique impact on the development of Norwegian modernism is manifest in his installations and designs for the RiddoDuottarMuseat in Karasjok. Deliberately moving between the aesthetics an...

VOICES OF THE CHORUS

Member of the Chorus Vivian on the work of Sammy Baloji: "The artist, coming from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, deals with ethnographic subjects and elements of post-colonialism. This work touches me a lot, as I am interested in what it means to decolonize museums. The work has many layers, starting with the raffia mats on display that once belonged to a Congolese community. When colonizers started invading the country, these mats where used as currency in slave trade, and today many objects such as these ones are in museums, exhibited in a very decontextualized manner. This complexity is often omitted when an object is presented in a Western museum - a vitrine or white cube is not necessarily a neutral setting. I find it important that documenta gives space to artists that explore these subjects. It is an eye-opener about the politics of art for many visitors - that's a meaningful moment for me as a mediator."

Alexander Kalderach (1880–1965)

Very little is known about Alexander Kalderach, who was born in Hamburg in 1880 and died in Bern in 1965. The acme of his painting career was in the 1940s, when his work was included in the *Grosse Deutsche Kunstausstellung* in the Haus der Deutschen Kunst (today Haus der Kunst) in Munich and caught the eye of Adolf Hi**er.

The EMST Collection at Museum Fridericianum, part of documenta 14, marks the first extensive presentation of the collection of the EMST–National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens. A mutually decided double displacement renders EMST’s new home, the renovated building of the former Fix brewery, one of the main venues of documenta 14 in Athens; in Kassel the Fridericianum, traditionally the centerpiece of documenta, as the temporary home of EMST’s collection.

ANTIDORON

The EMST Collection presents a selection of the EMST’s permanent collection in the Fridericianum, the birthplace of documenta and the first public museum in Europe. It negotiates concepts such as sharing, offering Antidoron (αντίδωρον, literally the return of a gift) or Antidanion (αντιδάνειo, the return of a loan either linguistic, cultural, or nancial). The prefix “anti” reveals a distinct position and consequently a view, not necessarily opposed to, but departing from a different point in order to communicate, to argue, to bridge, to converge, and to accept each others’ stances.

Some impressions from our piano concert from last Friday: Cornelius Cardew, *Thälmann Variations* and *We Sing For The Future!* and Frederic Rzewski, *Songs of Insurrection*

In the late 1960s, American composer and pianist Frederic Rzewski befriended experimental composer Cornelius Cardew, one of the founders of the renowned experimental music ensemble Scratch Orchestra. By the early 1970s, Cardew had become a Communist who applied his political views to his compositions. Remarking on the profound influence of Cardew on his work, in a 1997 interview with The New York Times, Rzewski commented, “Cardew wrote pieces that were convincing demonstrations of what could be done by using a tonal language with which large numbers of people were familiar to communicate advanced political ideas.” This influence, combined with Rzewski’s experiences as a member of Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV) starting in 1966 in Rome, led to Rzewski writing compositions that increasingly reflected his political concerns.

Cornelia Gurlitt was the daughter of the well-known Dresden art historian Cornelius Gurlitt Sr. and the sister of Hildebrand Gurlitt. A talented graphic artist and draughtswoman well-versed in the angular language of German expressionism, she would not live to see her brother ascend to the heights of the N**i art bureaucracy: she committed su***de in Berlin in 1919, barely thirty years old.

Allgemeine Information

documenta has come to represent a key periodic moment when contemporary art is exhibited and those who are interested in art as well as in its relation to the world meet, assess the situation and share their views. When documenta was conceived in the early 1950s by Arnold Bode it was a direct response to the “degenerate art” politics of the Third Reich. Therefore, contrary to other periodic international exhibitions which have emerged from the world fair models of the 19th century, it is characterised by a theoretical grounding and a sense of the urgency of art in society. Today no less than 50 years ago.

We are thrilled to announce a major acquisition by Tate Modern: elements of Nikhil Chopra’s ‘Drawing a Line Through Landscape’. The work comprises a group of two drawings, video, costumes, and props from his epic 2017 performance at documenta14. Aspects of the performance were exhibited at SFMoMA in 2019, and we are excited that its permanent home will allow new audiences in the UK to engage with this powerful work. Support for ‘Drawing a Line Through Landscape’ came from Chatterjee & Lal, Galleria Continua, the Piramal Foundation, and Documenta. At Documenta, it was Natasha Ginwala and Michelangelo Corsaro who brought the project to life. Nikhil’s collaborators were an extraordinary team of people from across disciplines:

On 24 February 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine starting a war. A war in which civilians, for whom Ukraine is home, are losing their lives and their hopes for the future. Since 24 February 2022, a humanitarian disaster bearing the hallmarks of a crime against humanity has been unfolding before our eyes; people, animals and the environment have been suffering. A country which, not so long ago, could actively support a solution to world hunger, with democratic institutions and a flourishing cultural life, is being unlawfully destroyed. The home of many artists, curators, cultural creators, activists, educators is being destroyed. The innocent are suffering.

This is why we are making a strong appeal to cultural and artistic venues, especially those whose messages and declarations so often include such words as: care, community, sensitivity and solidarity.

This appeal is addressed in particular to Western cultural institutions, which operate under safe conditions. We call on them not to ignore this conflict, which is an attack by oligarchy, kleptocracy and Putin on life, freedom, the possibility of self-determination and development, welfare and pluralism, values so dear to all democracies, regardless of geographical location. Values which Europe claims to uphold.

NOW IS TIME TO ACT!

➜ Use your channels to inform about the war and the genocide unfolding before our eyes.
➜ Share information about locally organised aid.
➜ DO NOT BE SILENT! Silence is condoning violence.
➜ Educate on the information war which is spreading all over the world and distorting the picture of events in Ukraine.
➜ Share your resources.
➜ Turn declarations into action!

Life will triumph over death, and light will win over darkness. But only if you do not remain indifferent. Let us stand together in solidarity in the fight against imperialist aggression!

FROM BENEFACTORS TO BUSKERS
The final episode of ATHENS UNPACKED is out today.
This is Athens Pod.gr
We look at the impact of the economic crisis on the city in terms of the flourishing arts.

I talk to Sudha Nair Iliades Athens Insider about the rivalries of the legendary shipping magnates Onassis and Niarchos and their cultural legacies: Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and Ίδρυμα Ωνάση / Onassis Foundation Stegi.

Urban geographer and former street artist George Papam unpacks street art in Psyrri - we discuss the portrait memorial of 'Riot Dog' Loukanikos (or 'Sausage').

British cellist Christopher Humphrys joined the Camerata Orchestra Καμεράτα Ορχήστρα των Φίλων της Μουσικής/ Armonia Atenea when it was founded 30 years ago for the astonishing Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών / Megaron - The Athens Concert Hall . He discusses classical music and plays us Bach in a park.

When I made the podcasts, my father Peter Zinovieff, was still alive. I talk about his participation in the huge Athenian arts festival documenta 14 in 2017. A beautiful clear vinyl of his electronic music piece "South Pacific Migration Party" has just been released by Andrew Spyrou and reviewed in the Financial Times - a month after my father's death.

We dance our way out with Balkan brass band Agia Fanfara (Saint Fanfare) and their intoxicating street music.

We tried to avoid the tourist traps and clichés in and didn't even go up the Acropolis or visit the astounding Acropolis Museum - Μουσείο Ακρόπολης . To say goodbye to the series there's a photograph taken up on the "Sacred Rock" by my daughter and assistant producer on the podcast series, Lara Papadimitriou (who also took the pictures of Sudha, George and Chris).
