HAPPY BIRTHDAY to us!

Today, exactly ONE year ago we welcomed our first artists in the prison for our very first Jailsession!
Wow, how time flies!

It all started with a spontaneous idea during the first Covid- Lockdown in 2020 and ended (till now) with 18 Jailsessions later!

A rollercoaster year during which we met great people and super talented artists. A year during which art, creativity and beauty was celebrated and new friends, connections and experiences made.

For now we're still "on hold" due to the Lockdown restrictions but we have lots of new ideas which we can't wait to try out!
But for now we're just going with the flow. So stay tuned!

Jailsessions is the work of many different people.

So, BIG thanks to:
• our amazing team of creative volunteers who give their talents, time, heart and energy to make it all happen. From planning ahead, filming, taking photos, editing, social media, catering and so much more.
If you were there from the beginning or joined somewhere in between: you matter and we are so grateful for everyone!

• Matthias from for letting us use the jail, your trust, support and always having our back!

• all the amazing artists who were part of this project so far and filled the prison with their own creativity!
Jailsessions exists because of you!

• for helping us jumpstart this spontaneous project in the time of only 2,5 weeks. We couldn't have done it without you!

• to our friends, family and Jailsession community here for your support and encouragement!

For more Jailsessions to come!

Have you ever tried to photograph yourself? The self-portrait discipline requires lots of creativity, imagination and skill. Look at the beautiful photos Vic took during her session in the jail!
She is currently running a self-portrait challenge on her Instagram page. She started the challenge out of boredom and frustration of staying at home. Hop over and get inspired, and support her and her incredible photography art!

Hang tight as we have a unique and powerful session with ! Her soulful and intimate songwriting draws you into the story telling of her music. The jailsessions team definitely forgot that they were in a prison while listening on the other side of the prison door. What's even more cool is that she does prison concerts and plays for inmates to share the power of music and that all are equal. Diana has been crowd funding for her prison music pojects and it is definitely worth supporting it: www.startnext.com/diana-ezerex-gefaengnisprojekt Before we share the next session we have the honour to interview Diana live in Instagram! Please join on Sunday at 6:50 pm in Instagram.

We couldn't believe how Diana Ezerex and Victure had such amazing chemistry despite being isolated in two separate cells! You'll know what we mean when you see the upcoming session this Sunday at 7:00PM. When two worlds collide to create a whole new storytelling process.

We cannot stop falling in love with Victure and her photography! That's right folks! We have our very first photography session here at Jailsessions! This session stretched the team creatively as Vic thought and created beyond the walls of her cell and the confines of our regular format. We're so excited to help facilitate this creative process and for you to see the final products as they are a whole different kind of level of storytelling. Diana weaves words into beautiful music while Vic weaves light to connect with the viewers. What a privilege it is to see such amazing women work their craft and invoking such powerful narratives. Catch their session this Sunday at 7:00PM on youtube!

Our fifth session had some of the most symbiotic collaboration we have had the priviledge of seeing in the prison. Emanuel ( - first picture) and Andy ( - second picture) have such amazing flow and movement that fight with the confinements of their prison walls. In contrast, DJ creates music that connects the cells, the energy, and the audience through space and time. Lose yourself in this session through the link in our bio (second session from 56:30 onwards). Let us know what you've been connecting with!

I’m Caolan, 27, and I’m an Irish Writer/Director, currently enjoying life in Berlin.

Within the JailSessions creative team, I’m doing a little bit of everything – shooting, editing and lending my hand to direction when it’s needed.
It’s exciting learning from those more experienced around me and getting the opportunity to try out my ideas while shooting the sessions. It’s a pretty raw and unique aesthetic, that really lends itself to storytellers.

A fun fact about me?
Aside from having a name that you’re probably still trying to pronounce. I suppose my fun fact is more a quiet ambition than a fun fact, but I would say it’s my desire to work with mental health, through film. It’s an area I care a great deal about, and I would love to take my camera with me while travelling the world and seek out positive stories of people who have dealt with mental health struggles, coming out stronger in the end. I don’t think enough people talk openly about mental health, but they should, it’s nothing to be afraid of!
I had been looking to get involved in filming music for a while now, and actually got connected to the project through one of JailSessions’ photographers, .
The next day, I think, I had a lovely conversation with and haven’t looked back since.
It’s an exciting project to be part of, that can only keep growing.

My favourite part of the JailSessions – now, that’s a hard one to pick. Working with a lovely and talented crew has been really enjoyable. But one of the little moments I enjoy most, is during the recording of the live session. Normally on a set, there’s no time to rest – but during the live session recordings, the chaos stops for a little while, so you can take a moment and listen to the music echo through the jail. It’s really unusual to get that opportunity on set, but it’s very powerful.
It’s a little moment just for you, and you can’t really help but smile! @ Köpenick, Berlin, Germany

„Dancing by myself in an intimate space and to focus on the process rather than on the outcome - Exactly what I love to do.
To move in another dimension, where walls do not exist, beyond borders and limitations.
I could have danced for hours in this tiny prison cell of 4 square meters.
Examining the texture of the bricks, playing witht the restrictions of the space and translating the silent cries of thousands of prisoners into movement.
Using my body as an instrument to communicate hope for the future for all the ones, who are captivated in the mind or the body.

„Freedom in captivity“ was not only an art project for me.
It was a moment, where I realized, how many prison walls have been broken down in my own healing story.“

WHAT IS THE PROJECT ABOUT?

66 artists locked in 66 cells: musicians, painters, sculptors, dancers, actors. 1 hour in solitary confinement. Surrounded by multiple cameras, they are all alone for a session in a cell. They hand over their smartphone and watch at the entrance to the prison. Live sound and imagery will be transmitted from the room by the cameras and microphones. We can see them, but they cannot see us.

The sessions take place two days in a row for various weeks. Each day, two different artists come between 17:00 and 19:00 and can be observed in their creative process through a Live-Stream. A weekly highlight reel of their work will be posted online. The respective artists broadcast live from home on their smartphones and explain how they experienced their solitary confinement and this brings them directly into contact with their audience.

We are searching for a different perspective of this world alongside these artists: the dreamers and prophets of our time. Together we discover a new world. Colours, shapes and music overcome bricks and steel. However, we don’t want to withdraw. At this time, our thinking is overpowered and our lives are ruled by the subject of the Corona- crisis. This is why we desire to look outwards and remember those who live in captivity. Whether it is on the island of Le**os, in Yemen, or in our own neighbourhoods where women and children experience domestic violence. Artists have the ability to give these people a voice.
