A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of watching what is likely Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, „The Boy and the Heron.“ Afterwards I had the urge to sketch some herons because they look so quirky yet kinda elegant. I’ll also wanna sketch the heron from the movie soon, maybe even with some color. On another page, you’ll find some lambs jumping for joy, hope you enjoy them too and thanks for looking.

First post of the year, and I wanted it to be something special (at least for me, and also because people tend to enjoy these kinds of posts, hehe). Anyway, here’s a glimpse of my two-year figure drawing progression. The first image is from May 23, while the second showcases my very first figure drawing class in March 21. Back then, drawing a complete figure felt like an unsolvable mystery, and I doubted if I could ever do it. Reflecting on it now, I’m proud of the strides I’ve made over the past few years.

Despite the progress, there’s still so much to learn, and I can’t shake the feeling that there are countless artists out there lightyears ahead of me. I suppose that sense of humility never fades. Nevertheless, none of this would have been possible without the guidance of the many great teachers I’ve encountered along my artistic journey. A special shoutout to – looking forward to meeting up with you guys in May! Here’s to another year filled with artistic growth and progress!

A work in progress shot of my long pose figure drawing study to keep me accountable. It’s nice to work in graphite on high quality Bristol paper for a change. Also this class with became instantly one of my favorite. Taking my time with this one is quite relaxing since I mostly draw much quicker efforts in charcoal. Oh and sorry for the cropping but Instagram won’t let me post the whole page for whatever reason and I had to censor the post as well.

A little figurative study from a while ago in colored pencil and some white charcoal for highlights. Really loved the mood and lighting in this one. This awesome reference was provided by … Oh and I also tried some hand toning of the paper with some left over gouache on my palette for the first time here. Hope you and enjoy and thanks for looking.

This is a gesture painting as part of the online program and my first proper oil painting I guess. Burnt umber and white only. It’s still quite a challenging act, learning a new medium, but the principles stay the same. Doing those quicker efforts allow for a looser and expressive brush work that I like a lot. Thanks to for leading the way.

Getting back to life drawing felt kinda rough at the start. But by the end of the session I was kinda in the zone and quite happy with this 20 minuteish effort.

In August I visited the .atelier.koeln with .prinz to finally start learning oil painting. Now that I have my home setup at the ready I can continue the learning. Atm I’m working my way through the painting section . This is the first burnt umber pickout of a little juvenile tiger I did back home. Amazes me what you can do with just one color, a rag and some q-tips.

I surprised my girl friend yesterday with this little illustration for her birthday (gladly she liked it). Lately my interest in art gravitates more and more to those contemporary artists (i.e. those artists or )that show the mundane life and I kinda felt inspired to do smth similar in my sketchbook with my beloved colored pencils. Hope you enjoy!
