It seems that in several Illuminati documents, there are some ambiguities in the numerical attributions to some of the letters.
In «Die Ächte Illuminat», for instance, the letter 'U' receives the value 20 while 'V' has the value 21, 'W' being omitted. In this case the letters 'X' and 'Z' are also switched, 'X' being given the value 24, while 'Z' receives the value 22. This has been also published in the precious volume by Wäges, Markner and Singh-Anand «The Secret School of Wisdom» on page 62.
In other cases, as in «Einige Originalschriften des Illuminatenordens», to the letter 'U' is given the value 20 and the letter 'W' is valued as 21, the 'V' being omitted. In this case, contrary to what happens in «Die Ächte Illuminat», the letters 'X' and 'Z' occupy their natural positions in the alphabet, 'X' having the value 22, and 'Z' the value 24.
While this can be a bit of a headache for anyone studying this specific cipher, and many authors having chosen to give 'V' the same value as 'W', I will contend that the true correspondences for the letters U, V, W, X and Z are these:
U = V = 20
W = 21
X = 22
(Y = 23)
Z = 24
This is no bold claim but the result of my own investigation, which I will gladly share with you. Please note that this is also the system used by Arkon Daraul in «A History of Secret Societies», and equally reproduced in the «Illuminatus!» Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson.
In both «Einige Originalschriften» and «Nachtrag von weitern Originalschriften» we have plenty of examples of uses of the Illuminati Novice Cipher. And the fact is that, in all cases where the number 20 appears, it always corresponds to either 'U' or 'V'. By contrast, the number 21 always corresponds to the letter 'W' (and only 'W'). The letters 'X' and 'Z' are also both given the values of 22 and 24, respectively. Here are some examples:
– In «Nachtrag von weitern Originalschriften»:
18. 12. 20. 4. 14. 2. 4. = "SAVIOLI"
(note that 20=V)
This refers to Count Ludwig Alexander von Savioli-Corbelli, alias "Brutus", a member of the Illuminati.
– In «Einige Originalschriften»:
[page 241]
18. 12. 20. 4. 14. 2. 4. = "SAVIOLI"
(the previous example is here confirmed)
[page 221]
18. 12. 20. 8. 17. = "SAUER"
(note that in this case, 20=U)
This may refer to Georg Conrad Sauer, alias "Attila", another member of the Illuminati.
[page 184]
– 7. 17. 8. 23. 1. 12. 20. 17. 8. 17. 14. 17. 9. 8. 13. = "FREYMAURERORDEN"
(note that 20=U)
This means "Freemasonic Order" in German. In modern German, however, it would be written with an 'I' instead of 'Y'.
[page 218]
21. 8. 18. 19. 8. 13. 17. 4. 8. 9. 8. 17. = "WESTENRIEDER"
(note that 21=W)
This refers to Lorenz von Westenrieder, whose alias in the Order of the Illuminati was "Pythagoras".
As far as I could check in «Einige Originalschriften», all the other occasions where a 21 was written, it always corresponded to a 'W'; never to a 'V'.
So after checking these sources, I've come to the conclusion that both 'U' and 'V' correspond to 20, while 'W' alone is given the value 21.
Now, my fellow readers, have you made any similar research, and would you like to share your findings? Please share any thought by private message, or by making a comment to this post.
Thank you.
