In keeping with the last "site of the week", our "object of the week" today also comes from Upper Austria. We proudly present one of the best conserved apples from a prehistoric pile dwelling sites:

"Oh dear, it's burnt"
These apples have been too close to the fire. Pile dwellers collected wild apples along with other fruits and tried to preserve them. The apples were cut into halves and dried near the fire. In this case the apples were spoiled by the fire – what a luck for today's archaeologists. They found several of these burned apple halves in a site at Lake Mondsee (AT).

And here the first object in our new rubric "object of the week":

"The Dagger Blade of Allensbach (DE)":

The blade of this dagger was imported from northern Italy and is made of silex from Mount Baldo at Lake Garda. The blade shows much use and re-sharpening, and it was probably lost byits owner at the site of today’s Allensbach Lido – because it was certainly a precious and very valuable item at the time.
Next to the Iceman’s dagger, it is the only other discovered dagger with a preserved haft. The haft is made of Elder wood and the blade was fastened with birch bark pitch.

On the occasion of today´s “International Day of Women and Girls in Science” we would like to introduce you to some of the women represented in the ICG - International Coordination Group.

They all have a scientific background and play a leading role in the management of the 111 pile dwelling sites that together form the transnational World Heritage Site of the "Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps".

Apart from the representative of each country chosen here, there are of course many other committed women (and men!) who contribute to the protection, research and communication of this important cultural heritage.

!!!Jetzt noch schnell ins Museum Ulm!!!

Die Archäologische Abteilung des Museums wird ab 23. Januar 2023 abgebaut und bleibt dann für längere Zeit geschlossen.

Wer die Originalfunde aus dem Steinzeitdorf Ehrenstein anschauen möchte, sollte die Zeitspanne bis dahin nutzen.

Baustellenführung am Donnerstag, 1. Dezember um 15 Uhr

Auch in der Winterpause wird hinter den Kulissen im Federseemuseum gearbeitet, wie das Dach eines der rekonstruierten Häuser der Siedlung "Taubried" zeigt. Denn nächste Woche wird das erfahrene Team von Dachdecker Wolfgang Thiel beginnen, dieses mit Stroh einzudecken. Interessierte können sich dies am 1. Dezember sogar direkt vor Ort anschauen: um 15 Uhr führen Museumsleiter Herr Dr. Baumeister und Herr Thiel durch die Baustelle, erklären die archäologischen Fakten dahinter und zeigen, welche Techniken angewendet werden, um ein Strohdach zu erstellen. Waren früher stroh- und reetgedeckte Häuser in den Orten oftmals zu sehen, verschwanden diese im 19. Jahrhundert durch strengere Brandschutzvorschriften immer mehr.
