Acoustic bodies outline, juxtapose, and mirror electronic gestures of solo improvisers during the 3-day event of the Exchanges series 🔄

✧ Jakob Riis’s sounds from analogue, digital and acoustic sources unfold in an improvisational exploration of the structures and spatial dimensions of sound, striving to create openings for both physical and mental resonance.

✧ Kris Kuldkepp’s “Curious Currents / A Variation” presents a microsection of the moving currents that compose the audible and for the human ear inaudible sonic space in and around Kintai, Lithuania. Those are transformed into a poetic sonic space, using modular synthesizer and DIY instruments.

✧ Lotte Anker works in the field between improvisation, experimental jazz, and contemporary composed music. Interested in the dynamics between ‘free’ improvisation and compositional practices, with an emphasis on exploring the manifold qualities in sound material, space and temporality.

✧ Chi Him Chik’s uses the body of the performer as a medium to present and interpret the idea of presence. Chi Him Chik works across sound, light and spatial media, creating immersive experiences that investigate psychological and perceptual phenomena.

✧ Jan Wegmann’s Krater 2 combines a custom modular synthesizer system with intimate field recordings and visuals. Using a synthesizer case with built-in speakers, it functions as an instrument body, allowing a blend of electronic textures and acoustic resonances.

✧ NNIS has gathered an archive of field recordings and found objects during his time in Asia. Those will be recontextualized through repetition, layering and gradual transformation creating slowly evolving structures that draw on ambient, drone and electroacoustic approaches.

➫ Duo Vergara & Carrasco is the result of a collaboration between the Chilean musicians Benjamín Vergara and Edén Carrasco, spanning more than 20 years. This partnership is reflected in practices in the context of experimental music, noise, minimalism, free jazz, site specific performance. The music of this project explores the limits of the timbres of these two acoustic air instruments, trumpet & sax, building zones with melodic lines camouflaged by textures, a noisy touch of drone blues, and a submarine version of cool jazz.

➫ Birgit Ulher lives as a freelance musician, sound artist and composer in Hamburg. After her studies in the field of visual arts, she developed her own playing techniques and preparations with trumpet, radio, loudspeakers and objects.

➫ Dario Sanfilippo is a composer, performer, audio programmer, and researcher specialised in musical complex adaptive systems. His artistic research focuses on the exploration of new music through artificial intelligence (in the broadest sense) and artificial life implemented via adaptive audio feedback networks.

► Louis d’Heudières will play new material from an upcoming album for harps, field recordings, synthesis and autotuned voice. Louis d’Heudières is a sound artist, composer and researcher based in Hamburg. Spanning live performance, installation and writing, their work speculatively (re)imagines pasts, presents and futures of human and non-human music-making.

► EMERGE will present his new album “leere” consisting of field-recordings of an abandoned mall. The field-recordings are re-worked and the set is played partly improvised using all the original samples, which are looped, mixed together and treated with effects. Sascha Stadlmeier (b. 1977) is a composer working at the intersections of musique concrète, drone, and noise.

The last event of the Blurred Edges Festival within the walls of Hörbar. Members of our team have put together an evening of self-developed ufo-like instruments, a first-time duo with pig pedals and a voice-augmented violin, topped by abstract electronic sounds alongside some fragmented lofi video footage.

This evening at Hörbar brings together four interdisciplinary artists whose performances conceive of experimental music as a living, process-driven act.

For the first time, Katt Hernandez and Marina Cyrino perform as a duo, uniting prepared flute and violin in an encounter that pushes the boundaries of their instruments through extended techniques, physical gestures, and electronics. Their performance becomes a dialogue between the acoustic and the digital, between precise virtuosity and spontaneous sonic exploration.

With his audiovisual work “Fair Use,” Sandro Nicolussi interrogates questions of originality and artistic appropriation: Using found film and audio recordings, he probes the moment where nostalgia tips into critique—and where piracy becomes an artistic act.

Isak Han places the body at the center of computer music: With his self-built instrument “nUFO,” he transforms code in real time into a responsive, almost organic sonic experience. Here, the machine is not operated but played.

Together, these four artists reveal the rich diversity of contemporary experimental music: as a space for collaboration, a form of resistance, and an act of playful discovery.
