The portrait is almost ready! The oak leaves crown and the flowers, especially the wild rose, have proved quite challenging, but they were worth modeling.

25th of April, Saint Mark's Day.
According to an ancient tradition in Venice, on Saint Mark's Day every man should bring a red rosebud (a "bocolo", in Venetian dialect) to his wife or girlfriend (or lover!). Indeed, a very romantic custom for our passionate city...

Paradoxes - Let's go back to the classics...
“And so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus.” If as the shores of Asia lessened upon his sight, the spirit of prophecy had entered into the heart of the weak disciple who had turned back when his hand was on the plough, and who had been judged, by the chiefest of Christ’s captains, unworthy thenceforward to go forth with him to the work, how wonderful would he have thought it, that by the lion symbol in future ages he was to be represented among men...

tardi conosce come li bisogna

(Ennio Concina, ‘Tempo Novo’, Venezia, 2006)
Auguri a Venezia, dunque, e ai suoi molti amanti...

The winged Lion is the symbol of Venice, because the winged lion described in the book of Revelation (Rv. 4,7) was identified as being St Mark the Evangelist, buried in the main church of the city. After the Venetian “theft” of the holy relics in Alessandria in Egypt, a legend aroused in which the Saint had a dream, while he was travelling across the Venetian lagoon. An angel revealed to St Mark that his body would have come to extreme and peaceful rest in Venice. Hence, the words “Peace to you, Mark, my Evangelist” that can be read, in Latin, on the open book. The winged Lion was placed by the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia in every town of its rich dominium.
