BUDAPEST, Hungary — Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Budapest on Saturday in the first Pride celebration since the electoral defeat of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, marking a significant moment for Hungary's LGBTQ+ community and supporters of civil rights.

The colorful parade featured rainbow flags, European Union banners, music, and peaceful demonstrations as participants celebrated a renewed sense of openness after years of political tension surrounding LGBTQ+ rights. Many attendees described the event as more than a celebration—it was a symbol of hope, visibility, and freedom.

Under Orbán's previous government, Pride events faced legal restrictions and growing political opposition, while several laws limiting LGBTQ+ rights sparked criticism from human rights organizations and European institutions. Following the recent election, Hungary's new government authorized this year's march, allowing the event to proceed with official police protection.

Despite the festive atmosphere, organizers emphasized that the march also highlighted the continuing struggle for equal rights and legal protections. Many participants expressed optimism that the country's political changes could eventually lead to reforms restoring freedoms that had been restricted in recent years.

The event drew one of the largest Pride crowds in Hungary's history, with supporters from across Europe joining local activists. The peaceful demonstration ended with speeches calling for equality, inclusion, and respect for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.🇩🇪

Around 1,000 travellers from Switzerland are still stranded in the Middle East as travel disruption continues across the region. Swiss authorities said many citizens remain affected by flight cancellations and ongoing instability, while the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has urged travellers to use its Travel Admin app and contact the FDFA helpline in urgent cases.

The number marks a sharp improvement from earlier this month, when Swiss officials said more than 4,000 Swiss travellers had been stuck in the region amid the wider crisis. Swiss International Air Lines had also arranged a special flight from Oman to help bring stranded passengers home, though reports later said no additional special flight was immediately planned.

Swiss authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely as the conflict and airspace disruptions affect travel across parts of the Middle East. Switzerland has also updated its public travel guidance and urged nationals in the region to stay registered and reachable.
