Salon Kennedy

Salon Kennedy operates between the concepts of a traditional commercial gallery and public art institution.

Hereby, the focus lies on the cultural production rather than the final exhibition product, creating constant archiving methods; entering and establishing new discourses. A carefully selected program of individual exhibitions, external projects and both verbal and printed discussions, accumulate an ongoing testimony of its contemporary art production. In this sense, the opening does not document t

he representation of a finished product but is rather seen as the starting point for further development.

Christian Jankowski `Who's afraid of conceptual art?´

Gesammelte Kritik (2001): a signed page from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, framed — reviews from different publications condensed into a single newspaper page, transforming public reception itself into artistic material.

Alongside it, Der sichere Ort (1994): Jankowski transformed his studio apartment — fitted with mirrored bulletproof windows and a professional security system — into a publicly accessible place of refuge for twenty-four hours. The paired black-and-white and colour photographs are what remains.

Christian Jankowski `Who's afraid of conceptual art?´

In 2016, Jankowski received BBC art historian Dr. James Fox in his studio — completely naked, throughout the entire interview. Who's afraid of conceptual art? (2016) turns the documentary itself into the performance, approaching questions of authorship, irritation and mediation that run through the entire exhibition.

Nearby, Casting Jesus (2011) lives on as a set of prayer cards — double-sided prints from the project where Vatican officials judged actors auditioning for the role of Christ.

And Die Seitenwende (2025): a signed stack of 49 copies of the taz, the last print edition ever published, dated 17.10.2025 — the transition from print to digital captured through the hands of the newspaper's own employees.

Christian Jankowski `Who's afraid of conceptual art?´

For Review – Waterproof Test (2012), Jankowski invited 83 international art critics and journalists to handwrite a review of a work he would make from their words — then asked each to seal their text inside a bottle of their choosing. The sealed bottles were briefly submerged in the Hudson River and retrieved.

The accompanying diptych lists every contributor by name, alongside a single photograph: a bottle floating in open water. The reviews themselves remain sealed. To read them would mean destroying the work.

Christian Jankowski `Who's afraid of conceptual art?´

Review – Waterproof Test (2012) anchors the room — 83 bottles, 83 critiques sealed inside, retrieved from the Hudson River. The reviews remain unread.

Around them, the Neue Malerei series follows a different chain of collective production. Jankowski found photographs online of anonymous people reenacting masterworks of art history as tableaux vivants — Van Gogh, Picasso, Balthus, Dalí — and commissioned specialist copy painters in China to translate them back into oil on canvas at the scale of the originals. Each transfer carries its own losses: the untreated edges of the canvas mark where the proportions of the photograph and the historical work no longer align.

Christian Jankowski `Who's afraid of conceptual art?´

At the centre of the room, Luftschloss Burg (Castle in the Air Fortress) (2026) glows against the window — drawn first by a drywall worker onto his construction plans during the building of David Chipperfield's Château Royal in Berlin, then rebuilt in neon.

Around it, Der kleine Entscheidungsraum (Little Decision Rooms) (2014): at Brenners Park-Hotel in Baden-Baden, guests furnished an entirely empty room from the hotel's own inventory, spent the night alone, and determined the monetary value of their experience before checking out. Each room, each decision, photographed and framed.
