"Cerce Trova"

DE:

EN:
This work is the beginning of my surrealist collection and also counts as a political piece. Here, the recognition of the greco-roman cultural and political influence on the modern western hemisphere plays a central role. This should also serve to harken back to those times, but in an enlightened and nuanced way. In this piece, symbolism is crucial. The bust of the Roman goddess of the hunt, Diana (in ancient Greece, Artemis), glances knowingly at the writing in red: "Cerce Trova" (Italian: Who seeks shall find). The old wall is losing its plaster and the bricks are weathered. The ionian column serves as an architectural element. In the background there are two cypress trees on the Mediterranean landscape under the afternoon sun. This represents the world after the fall of the Roman empire. The wall is not without symbolism: the plaster is flaking off and the colorful bricks are damaged. But, this also represents the diversity under a unified plaster. This stands in contrast with the idea of right-wing amateur historians, because the Roman empire was defined by its linguistic, cultural and ethnic diversity and was never completely white. Hence the title: our hemisphere must unite with all of its diversity in order to craft a collective identity in order to achieve success for all.

DE: "Farbstudie I: Primärfarben"

EN: "Colorstudy I: Primary Colors"

This is a color study utilizing the primary colors of the Bauhaus school of art and design: Blue, red, yellow, white, gray and black. The original intention was to mix the colors in the transitional areas, which wasn't possible to do after the paint dried.

"A Very Different Christmas"

As the title suggests, this year has a very different type of christmas than we are accustomed to, but in this particular work for other reasons. I came up with a novel idea! For sure we all know of graphic designs or box art depicting christmas, but never a painting dedicated to the holiday for wall display. This work features a modern-minimalistic take on the holidays in my usual fashion with Kandinsky elements. Also note the star of Bethlehem in the window. It is said that it appeared this year on the 21st of December, which also anchors this work well into this year. So I'm wishing all of you a merry Christmas and a (hopefully) happy new year!

"Memphis"

This is a project that I made back in 2019 (feels like ages, right?) but forgot to post about. This is a hand painted, double-layer bookmark with an iconic 80's design. The title alludes to the Memphis Group - an international collaboration of artists, designers and architects based out of Milan, Italy. Their style defined the aesthetics of the 1980's - from fashion and ads all the way to interior design. The name of the group refers to a Bob Dylan song that they had playing in their studio. The bright pastel colors and contrasting geometric patterns and shapes were the hallmark of this style. And without further ado, I present to you my first bookmark. Maybe there will be more to come (nudge nudge wink wink)...

"Through the Thick of It"

Another installment in my series of paintings that depict anglo-american idioms and phrases. This time with some Kandinsky-esque aesthetics. This work illustrates persevering through trying times and as such, accurately represents the year 2020.

Sometimes, ya just gotta power through!

"Das Rathaus von Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz"

This is a painting I made as a present for a grandfatherly friend of mine for his 73rd birthday. The painting depicts the famous (now reconstructed) town hall of his hometown. In this work I attempted to mimic the style of Lyonel Feininger, a German-American painter who was a teacher at the Bauhaus school of art and design.

"Fade to Gray"

This painting symbolizes the harrowing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown. The title references the complete and total standstill of private and economic life. The shape of the corona virus has befallen the map-styled city and the light vs. the dark represents the health system's struggle between life and death, as shown by the hospital in the light and the cemetery in the dark.

"Sunset over the Texas Panhandle"

What started as a color study became a full fledged painting of its own. It depicts the basic colors and layers of a sunset over the steppes of the Panhandle of Texas. Extra detail is added through the shrubs in green and beige.

"Eye of the beholder"

The second installment to my series of paintings where I illustrate idioms, sayings and phrases from the English speaking world. This one shows some of the major variations of eye color on a gradient. The golden star in the center represents subjective beauty perceived by individuals, including those who cannot see. Note the physical texturing of the paint which imitates the look of a human iris. Inspiration for the style comes from traditional color wheels, roulette wheels and the colorful dials of vintage 70s watches.

"Heartland"

This is a painting that I made for my grandfather as a gift for his 80th birthday, which took four months to complete. It is an abstract, patriotic American landscape painting. Inspiration came from the style of Lyonel Feininger, a German-American painter from New York who worked at the Bauhaus school. Note the differences in glossyness on the wheat fields and the windmill. Also note the shading on the grass resulting from the windmill, the water trough, the barn and the grain silo. Each triangle shows different shades and offer various interesting angles of perspective.
