gLOKALE is a hybrid festival that each year illuminates and penetrates a framework theme from the current transformation of society by the means of multimedia theatre, sound installations, spatial stagings, presentations, readings and discussions.

The gLOKALE events, which take place in small towns in the countryside as well as in large cities, are streamed live online and invite an international audience in many locations to take part in the performance and subsequently discuss it live with the local audience and the actors. In an interactive exchange, people from different regions, contexts and areas of work are encouraged to reflect on contemporary issues with others and to get involved in the search for answers. The festival was initiated by teatreBLAU and is developed in co-operation with Digitale Bühne gGmbH and local partners. It is funded by the German Federal State of Brandenburg along with specific ministries and foundations.

We'll have 5 incredible performances, all of them available online through the digital-stage.org

In the sixth and final event of the gLOKALE festival, the recorded premiere of Roua Horanieh's play "Home, Pizza/Visa & A Pledge To The Queen" at Kleist Forum Frankfurt (Oder) will be streamed on the Digital Stage. Produced by the international art collective teatreBLAU, the performance, directed by Hans-Ulrich Becker, revolves around the question of individual and cultural identities in migration. How do people feel at home in a new place when they have lost their old home or left it voluntarily? The protagonist Miriam, a Syrian architect like the author herself, leaves Damascus and starts a new life with her husband and daughter in London. Her memories of her old home are contradictory: on the one hand, they show scenes of great beauty in inconspicuous everyday life, but on the other, scenes of corruption and oppression that provoke anger. Three actresses and three actors from the teatreBLAU ensemble play alternating roles in scenes from Miriam's search, inviting the audience to reflect on their own experiences of home. The performance works with video projections, music and voices from the off, and the play unfolds in German, English and Arabic with German subtitles.

gLOKALE Day 5: „Are we able to hear all that is around us?“

In the fifth event of the gLOKALE festival, musician and sound artist Kurt Holzkämper, environmental scientist Prof. Dr. Hubert Wiggering, and voice teacher Maria Katharina Schmid will talk about their „Ursprung & Lauf“ project. In their MONAS collective, they are using biodata sensors alongside microphones to transform moors into soundscapes. While the acoustic dimension of urban environments is increasingly explored, the MONAS collective is operating with field recordings, soundscapes and sound installations in an artistic-scientific approach to a biotope that has a specific status in nature between the solid and the liquid. Having a focus on moors as climatic landscapes, the MONAS collective, which also involves the composer Jens Joneleit, local guest artists around the photographer Mirko Joerg Kellner and further participants, has created the ensemble work „Ursprung & Lauf“. Kurt Holzkämper, Hubert Wiggering and Maria Katharina Schmid will also present parts of a film about the working process of the MONAS collective and play excerpts from the composition for moor, double bass and violin. Their presentation will be streamed live via the Digital Stage and subsequently discussed with Maria Katharina Schmid from the MONAS collective, pianist Sebastian Berakdar and sound artist Giorgio Sancristoforo from Milan. The audience participating online is invited to join in with questions and comments via the chat function.

Kurt Holzkämper, a musician on bass, double bass and synthesizer, and a composer, seeks interlocking engagement with other art forms such as modern dance, drama and sound installation. He founded MONAS collective in 2022. In the series of his interdisciplinary and international projects, „MooreHören / HearMoors“ opened up collaboration with scientific research in 2022, and the interactive sound performance "MoorReaktor" was performed in a gallery for the first time in 2023.

Prof. Dr. Hubert Wiggering is Professor of Geoecology at the University of Potsdam and was Scientific Director of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research in Müncheberg until 2014. One of his fields of work is the development of innovative research structures and new ways of transferring knowledge.

Maria Katharina Schmid studied cultural and media education, was involved in various intercultural projects and is project manager for „MooreHören / Hear Moors“ in the MONAS collective. In 2021, she began training as a breathing, speech and voice teacher.

gLOKALE, DAY 4: „Could a different model of rural life be a new way of living in the future?“

In the fourth event of the gLOKALE festival, actress Annie O'Callaghan visits the village of Sineu in Mallorca to read visions from people all over Spain about the future prospects of life in the countryside. With the development of digital media, it has now become possible to participate in global cultural life also in rural areas, and to rehearse theater or play music with others online, becoming active together from distributed locations. It can thus be more attractive to live in the countryside, in connection with nature, but not without a modern, dynamic lifestyle. A new balance between city and countryside is emerging as a possibility, and will be explored in more detail in the reading. Katja Lebelt, artistic director of teatreBLAU, conceived the event in collaboration with Lukas Thiele and collected the reading texts. Annie O’Callaghan’s reading will be streamed on the digital-stage.org and is thus accessible to the audience in Sineu and to an international online audience. The following discussion with invited guests will also call the audience on site and online to engage. The event takes place in collaboration with Frontón Sineu.

Annie O’Callaghan is an actress, author, director, educator, and producer, who worked with Teatro UCAB, Fundación Medatia, and Producciones Palo de Agua in Venezuela, and subsequently in Barcelona with Teatro de los Sentidos, Jocular Theatre, Espai DebuT* - Sala Beckett, IPA Productions, Escapade Theatre, and Barcelona Improv Group. In 2019, Annie founded Teatro del Sótano, a non-profit association dedicated to the research and development of socially-aware theater expression through devising and collective creation. Teatro del Sotano’s current projects include educational and artistic workshops with immigrant youth, integrating personal narrative and 360 video, and hybrid theater labs on gender equality, archetypes and emotional wellbeing.

Musician and sound artist Kurt Holzkämper transforms bogs and marshes into soundscapes by using biodata sensors. Kurt’s work and research focus on the connection between sound and biodata.

We stream a short film from his Monas-collective explaining this process. We also stream a composition for marsh and two instruments around the theme of climate landscapes. Environmental scientist Prof. Dr. Hubert Wiggering (Uni Potsdam), photographer Mirko Joerg Kellner and Kurt discuss their work ‘Ursprung & Lauf” (origin & course) with the online audience.

The MONAS collective develops transformative interdisciplinary projects from sound and video art, biodata sonification and science. The direct inclusion of the natural world in artistic work opens up a new insight into our anthropocentric perception of nature as a counterpart and on the juxtaposition of nature and culture.
