RECAP DAY 2 - DORTMUND

This festival’s first Saturday was all about performing sounds as the result of complex interaction. The day at the storyLAB kiU in Dortmund started off with the lecture talk „Chemical Calls of Care II“.

Like our sense of hearing, our sense of smell cannot be controlled which results in the involuntary reception and interpretation of what we perceive. Looking at consequences for an artistic approach Tim Löhde and Yolanda Uriz Elizalde gave insights into the perception of smell and how different scents may have different sounds.

Later on, Yolanda’s performance „Transitory Presences“ showed the influence of sound to an incense stick. The depth of the bass and the projection of the dying embers drew one into a struggle against extinction.

In “Housewarming II,” Hye Young Sin took us on a journey through the sounds of imitation, recreating two experiences. In her acoustic greenhouse we heard the chirping of birds, the whistling of trains and nature being created by funny little gadgets like recorders or bird wistles filled with water.

TinTin Patrone showed an improvisation, taking the „idiosyncratic“ in her partner very serious. In a humorous, provocative and thought-provoking performance featuring a remote-controlled electric children’s wheelchair, she challenged us not only to reflect on AI but also on our expectations regarding our interpersonal relationships.

A night that challenged expectations on sound and ourselves, and was very intense both physically and atmospherically.

RECAP DAY 1 - FESTIVAL OPENING

For the 3rd time, Essen’s Szene 10 provided a welcoming venue for the opening of the BLAUES RAUSCHEN festival.
The evening started with opening remarks by Artistic Director Karl-Heinz Blomann, Essen’s Alderman for Culture, Muchtar Al Ghusain, Birgit Neyer, Deputy Chair of the LWL Cultural Foundation and Markus Heuger, editor at WDR 3 radio.

Infront of a full audience, Basak Günak then presented her earth-shaking performance of “Rewilding”: jarring basslines, pulsating synths and nature sounds that sparked a utopian fantasy in the heart of the Ruhrpott.

Christian Rosales Fonseca took us on a journey into the question of colonial heritage. Earth, sticks, leaves and an illuminated drum. Traditional objects met imitations of video recordings, culminating in a fusion of past and present.

Nadia Struiwigh dedicated her new album IKIGAI to her late father. Poignantly, she weaved her way through playful, mystical, and questioning sounds in memory.

An acoustically deep, diverse and emotionally charged start that has us looking forward to the upcoming events.

PODCAST EPISODE 34: The Haptic of the Invisible

In Episode 34, Tim Löhde meets composer Robert Lippok alongside sound performer Hye Young Sin. They discuss how physical materials, from the delicate resonance of glass to discarded everyday objects and trash, can be transformed into striking sonic experiences. The conversation moves through the historical relationship between architecture and acoustics, as well as the fragile balance between order and chaos. Both guests will present new works at the BLAUES RAUSCHEN Festival. With his project “Material”, Robert Lippok reflects on fluid societies and architectural superstructures, while Hye Young Sin experiments with fundamental physical properties in her upcoming work “House Warming No. 2”, where a digital electronic network generates and produces air currents.

Robert Lippok is a visual artist and avant-garde pioneer based in Berlin. Known for his work with the influential post-rock band To Rococo Rot and his solo releases on labels such as raster-noton, he moves effortlessly between club music, performance, and visual art installation. His work is shaped by a deep fascination with architectural space, granular synthesis, and the tension between organic and digital sound worlds.

Hye Young Sin is a South Korean performer based in Berlin whose practice is rooted in experimentation, mechanical movement, and kinetic objects. Her work emerges from close observations of everyday environments, transforming tangible objects and scientific concepts into poetic sound installations and live performances.

FESTIVAL OPENING – It’s happening!

Tomorrow, the 8th edition of BLAUES RAUSCHEN finally starts! The evening sets the beginning of two weeks packed with experimental sound, performances, media art and sonic exploration.

To kick off this year’s festival, the evening brings together three artistic positions that understand sound as an archive, as resistance and as an existential movement. What connects them is a practice of reactivation: material is not simply played back, but exposed, questioned and transferred into new contexts.

JUNE 12, DOMICIL, DORTMUND
IN THE OPEN – SUBTLE TRANSITIONS IN THE SOUND SPACE

At Dortmund’s Domicil, a traditional jazz club with an open, sophisticated program, the special club atmosphere provides the ideal setting for extraordinary sound experiments. The finale of this year’s BLAUES RAUSCHEN festival brings together three different artistic approaches.

With Merche Blasco, Thomas Lehn x Georg Gräwe and Robert Lippok, this evening brings together artists who think of sound as an open structure.

The focus is not on the finished work, but on transitions: between acoustic and electronic, between impulse and processing, between setting and reaction.

Here, material remains audible as texture, as resistance, as energy in space. Processes interlock, cycles emerge, decisions are made in the moment. Improvisation appears less as a style than as a precise form of action within clear aesthetic parameters.

A concert evening that does not level differences, but makes them productively recognizable, quiet, concentrated and with great attention to what is happening in the sound.

Tonight is about sound in a state of constant transformation.

JUNE 11, LOKAL HARMONIE, DUISBURG
SOUND IN TRANSITION

The Lokal Harmonie in Duisburg is one of the most influential locations for experimental music in the Ruhr area. The intimate concert hall provides a focused listening environment in which the finest tonal shifts and spatial resonances can unfold immediately.

With Verena Hentschel, Andrea Ermke x Annette Krebs, and the Viennese trio INNODE, three artistic styles come together on this evening that understand sound as a dynamic structure between material, structure, and transformation. Electronic composition, field recordings, self-developed instruments, percussion, and modular synthesis form an open field in which analog and digital processes influence each other.

The evening focuses on states of transition. Sounds emerge from fragments, are condensed, looped, shifted, or destabilized. Noise, rhythm, and electronic textures enter into changing relationships and give rise to structures that dissolve again in the same moment.

Circulate, rotate or just sit for this one:

JUNE 10, ADA (GRILLO-THEATER), ESSEN
CIRCULATING SYSTEMS – ROTATION, INTERFACE, SIGNAL

This evening focuses on sound as a process. Xiao Fu x Andzejus Voroneckis, Ignaz Schick and burgund t brandt work with technical equipment and performative setups in which movement, signal and material intertwine.

In ‘Fluidity’ by Xiao Fu x Andzejus Voroneckis, a cycle is created through the interplay of dance, gesture, vibration and AI-supported sound generation. With ‘ROTARY PERCEPTIONS for turntables’, Ignaz Schick focuses on the rotation of the turntable as a physical and sonic practice. In ‘Between Distances,’ burgund t brandt combines software-defined radio, field recordings and synthesis into a network of signals that structurally intertwines ecological and technological processes.

Together, these works open up the space between performance, sound art and improvisation. The evening shows how perception shifts when bodies, devices and environments enter into an open system of mutual feedback.

As the experimental stage of the Grillo-Theater, the ADA offers an open space for performative and media-based crossovers between music, dance and sound art.

Reimagined Instruments: Between code and organism

JUNE 07, ANNELIESE BROST MUSIKFORUM RUHR, BOCHUM
RESONANCE CHAMBERS BETWEEN CODE AND ORGANISM

The Musikforum Ruhr in Bochum stands for tonal precision and architectural transparency; a space that makes differences audible and clearly delineates complex structures. It is here that an evening with Gamut, Benoît and the Mandelbrots, and Navid Navab unfolds, rethinking instruments, technology, and collective practice.

What connects these three constellations is an understanding of music as a system in the making. With Benoît and the Mandelbrots, the code itself becomes a visible score; algorithmic processes structure the sound in real time and make digital logic performatively tangible. Navid Navab‘s works transform historical instruments into hybrid, breathing sound bodies in which control tips into turbulence and acoustic order is renegotiated. Finally, Gamut operates in the field of experimental instrumental practice – mechanical, analogue – expanding and investigating resonance as physical and social energy.

Thus, the Musikforum Ruhr becomes a laboratory for contemporary musical practice – a place where mathematical models, acoustic bodies and collective decision-making processes overlap in a shared dramaturgy.
