Tanz in den Mai at OLYMP

Step into the myth.

On the night of April 30, the exhibition OLYMP by Manzur Kargar () becomes the stage for a special Tanz in den Mai celebration. Set within the unique atmosphere of Kunstraum Heilig Geist, the evening unfolds as an Olympian gathering of gods — under the patronage of Dionysos, god of wine, ecstasy, and transformation.

Surrounded by Kargar’s monumental paintings, the boundaries between artwork, space, and audience begin to dissolve. Music, movement, and the charged visual language of OLYMP come together to create an immersive experience between ritual and contemporary culture.

Join us for a night that blurs myth and reality — where ancient narratives meet the present, and the exhibition becomes a living, breathing encounter.

Opening this Sunday, April 26 at 4 PM

OLYMP by Berlin-based artist Manzur Kargar unfolds as a powerful encounter between ancient mythology and contemporary image culture.
Set within the extraordinary architecture of Kunstraum Heilig Geist — a former church by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Gottfried Böhm — the works enter into a dialogue with the space, bridging past and present.
Through large-scale, vividly colored oil paintings, Kargar reimagines the gods of Olympus in a striking visual language shaped by classical figuration, digital aesthetics, and the glossy worlds of advertising.
The exhibition is accompanied by videos by filmmaker Andrea Schumacher.

Ten years of the light installation “EUROPA” – and after eight years, EUROPA is shining again in Essen.

Against the backdrop of growing uncertainty about the future of Europe, Caro Baumann () and Johannes Schele from the Berlin-based architecture studio morePlatz have created a powerful statement in public space with their light installation “EUROPA.”

An Olympian gathering of gods — Kunstraum Heilig Geist at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein presents “OLYMP” by Berlin-based artist Manzur Kargar () curated by Jürgen Kalthoff ().

At the heart of the exhibition are large-scale oil paintings in which Kargar reinterprets the gods of ancient Olympus through a lush, contemporary visual language. Blending classical figurative painting with influences from digital imagery, advertising, and glossy aesthetics, his works are bold, vibrant, and deeply layered.

Ancient mythology meets urgent contemporary questions — power, beauty, identity, and the contradictions of human nature emerge through these striking figures, opening a dialogue between past and present.

The exhibition is accompanied by videos by filmmaker Andrea Schumacher, presenting Kargar’s statements on themes such as his own reality, his Olympus, and his gods.
