Yesterday we said our final goodbyes to Branko Cotar, one of the visionaries of the community Karakterre is building and promoting today.

Starting in 1974, in the far corner of Slovenia bordering Italy, the idea was “simple” — to make wine from historic varieties of the Karst zone, without much intervention. What wasn’t simple was the environment. With its Mornik and seriously rough Burja winds, shallow terra rossa and plenty of stone, nature here does not compromise. It’s a wild place to grow anything.

Rather than trying to master it, Branko adapted to nature. Nature responded by giving the family grapes that went on to make wines that have resonated ever since the first vintage.

Many would have left such an unforgiving terroir. The Cotars decided to do what they did best. Along the way, and possibly unaware of it, they gifted us knowledge, culture, ideas and joy.

Branko will be sadly missed.

We send our thanks to him for letting us be a small part of the story. Branko’s ideas will be carried on by his family and the global community alike.

“There is a big difference between Chardonnay from Central Europe and Burgundy. What you get in California is more of a Burgundy clone, combined with oak. In Styria and Central Europe, you get something I like more—a chamomile-and-meadow vibe,” says Phil Sareil, one of founding members and a senior sales executive.

Phil is widely considered one of the early pioneers of wines from Central and Eastern Europe in the United States. That makes him a natural guest for the Karakterre podcast, and this conversation was long overdue.

He has also been an advocate of low-intervention wine since its earliest days. All the more reason to listen to Karakterre interview that did with someone who has quietly shaped what—and how—we drink.

New Newsletter Post: We’ve just sent our newsletter out with a few thoughts on the last weekend’s first Nachbarn festival in Znojmo.

This Bottled Alive event is envisaged as a gathering of winegrowers from the area around the both sides of the Czech-Austrian border only. It’s also a nod to the region’s turbulent history. Plus, we wrote a few tips on where to get coffee and cakes in this Southern Czech town.

Karakterre 18 is just ten days away! On 13 and 14 May, we will host more than 200 organic and biodynamic winegrowers from Austria, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as their international friends, in the beautiful Orangery Park in Eisenstadt, Austria. Tickets are available on our website.

The list of surrounding events, organized by the community, is long and impressive. We thank everyone for joining us in this celebration of wine, food, farming, and friendship. Austria will undoubtedly be one of the global centers of wine next week, together with the VieVinum event taking place over the weekend and on Monday.

Karakterre 17 through the lens of .

Our first-ever German event at .eberbach was beyond anything we could have wished for. The turnout of both growers and the trade and public, the knowledge exchanged, the atmosphere, the food, and the happy faces — together we began to grow something special in Germany.

The Karakterre team of Claudia, Aleks, Niko, Emmanuel and Marko would like to thank all of you who made the week special. (And a special shout-out to Rebecca at Kloster Eberbach.)

See you in 2027!
