One of our highlights at the Art & Place Conference was the chance to showcase interesting work in printed publications to further explore the theoretical framework of our program.

The result is the Art & Place Magazine—a new series of small-format, visual publications, each focusing on some particular moment in the relation between artists and places.

The second issue in the series was produced in collaboration with French curator Mathieu Tremblin, and produced with the support of Le Grand Jeu and Wolklinger Hütte UNESCO World Heritage Site .

As part of the Urban Art Biennale 2024, Tremblin curated a programme of residencies in the post-industrial city of Wölklingen, located in south-western Germany near the French border. Artists carried out a series of over seventy informal artistic interventions.

The programme included works by Coco Bergholm (Germany) , Epos 257 (Czech Republic) , Antonio Gallego (France) .galllego, Deana Kolencikova (Slovakia) , Mathieu Tremblin (France) and the collective Wanderlust Social Club (Belgium, France), alongside performances by Pascal Ansell (United Kingdom) and the duo Léa Hussenot and Corentin Seyfried (France).

Most works emerged from a public call for ideas among local residents.
In the magazine, the miniature figures painted by Wanderlust Social Club serve as a visual thread to explore a small portion of the project’s output.

All interventions were carried out without formal permissions and have
been documented and geolocated in an open-source online map.

As we wrap up our post series about the Art & Place Conference, we’re delighted to showcase this thoughtful article written by Katja Glaser , a scholar who has been part of the specialized research community for years.

The text provides an in-depth review of the four days of conference last May in Saarbrücken, Germany: talks, films, books, museum and gallery exhibitions, artist residencies, and more, bridging the gap between street art and contemporary art.

Thank you, Katja, for joining us and showcasing the event. We extend our gratitude to UP Magazine for featuring this piece.

One of our highlights at the Art & Place Conference was the chance to showcase interesting work in printed publications to further explore the theoretical framework of our program.

The result is the Art & Place Magazine—a new series of small-format, visual publications, each focusing on some particular moment in the relation between artists and places.

Dutch street art pioneer Jeroen Erosie was our collaborator for the first issue in the series. Erosie opened for us his treasure trove of photographs from the forgotten years of the Eindhoven sticker mania of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Eindhoven played a cardinal yet unsung historical role for street art as the hotbed for the earliest sticker frenzy. The local scene exploded at the turn of the century, infected nearby Rotterdam, and spilled its work and influence across many European cities.

The Eindhoven sticker slappers were among the earliest travelling street artists of the present era. Figures from that scene like Erosie and Infuenza went on to become professional artists.

We partnered with local independent powerhouse Automat to present a special artist residency by OX, a living legend from the founding years of European street art.

As part of this residency, OX installed a series of commissioned works on column-shaped billboards across Saarbrücken. In addition, Timo Poeppel curated a solo show by the artist at Automat .

OX has been hijacking billboards for more than four decades. He started his career as part of the seminal collective Les Frères Ripoulin, best remembered for their freestyle work on the street billboards of Paris in the mid-eighties.

The presence of OX, who also presented his work with a talk at the Historical Museum Saar, provided the perfect perspective for the conference program, dedicated to exploring the early decades of street art.

More images from the flash residency by French street art pioneer Antonio Gallego, curated by Mathieu Tremblin at the Art & Place Conference in Saarbrücken.

📸 The complete photo report from the conference is now available on our website!

Antonio Gallego was a member of French collective Banlieue-Banlieue, founded in 1982 and one of the earliest forces in European street art. Between 1989 and 1993 the artist produced a little-known series of site-specific text-based posters.

Working with archival materials from that groundbreaking series, Gallego and Tremblin produced produce a project in Saarbrücken that merges archival work and site-specific public intervention.

On a first stage, large reproductions of archival photographs from the installed posters were pasted on the outside wall of History Museum Saar. In a more experimental approach, text-based posters used for the original work were reprinted and pasted around the streets of Saarbrücken, reenacting Gallego’s 35-year-old site-specific interventions.

These images capture moments from the installation process and the exclusive guided tour with both curator and artist.
