𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀.

A Chopin mazurka could lead him to James Frazer. Laurence Sterne could lead to Nabokov. Johannes Kepler could become the structural model for an eight-year handwritten manuscript of his own.

His reading was not simply a list of books. It was a way of making unexpected connections between music, literature, history and ideas.

This is only a small part of Pavel Kushnir’s reading world.

Pavel Kushnir was sceptical of the idea that artistic development could follow the same logic as athletic training.

In sport, he argued, practice can take you from not being able to do something to being able to do it.

But art?

“There is no path,” Pavel said. “These are illusions and manipulations.”

For him, there was no universal route from A to B. Every artist had to somehow make those points meet in their own way.

It’s an uncomfortable idea — especially for young musicians who are constantly told to practise more, improve more, perfect more.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗞𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱?

His reading list was anything but predictable: Truman Capote, Leo Tolstoy, Stieg Larsson, William S. Burroughs, Vladimir Nabokov — and an unfinished manuscript left behind by a friend who died far too young.

From Russian classics to crime fiction and counterculture, these books offer a glimpse into the wide and curious mind behind the pianist.

Pavel didn’t seem interested in staying within one literary world. And perhaps that’s exactly what makes his reading list so fascinating.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗙 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗔 𝗦𝗬𝗠𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗡𝗬?

For this special experience, we are inviting you to hear Beethoven’s First Symphony from a perspective you probably haven’t experienced before.

For the first half, you won’t be sitting in the audience. You’ll be placed alongside the musicians of the Willow Orchestra — right next to the strings, brass and other sections of the orchestra — during their rehearsal of Beethoven’s First Symphony.

From inside the orchestra, the music may sound different. It may be distorted or unbalanced. That is part of the experience.

Then, after the interval, your seats will be returned to their usual position.

You’ll hear the same music again — this time as an audience.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗻𝘆. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁.

Conducted by Bogdan Skrypka.

This special concert is presented by the Pavel Kushnir Scholarship, inspired by Pavel’s spirit as a musician, educator and provocateur.

What makes a musician courageous?

Technical excellence can be taught.

Integrity cannot.

The Pavel Kushnir Scholarship was created to support young musicians whose artistic vision is matched by intellectual honesty, curiosity and courage.

We believe that great performances are not only technically accomplished — they are deeply personal, thoughtful and uncompromising.

This is the spirit in which the scholarship continues Pavel Kushnir’s legacy.

Few recordings of Pavel Kushnir’s performances have been preserved

In this series, we would like to share them and help more people discover Pavel not only as a political prisoner, activist, and educator, but also as a musician

Music was a central part of his life, and we believe these recordings deserve to be heard
