Am 22. Juli eröffnen wir THE GARDEN.

On July 22, we open THE GARDEN. CINEMATICS OF THE SOIL, an exhibition project about the work and life of filmmaker and activist Derek Jarman, who died in 1994. In addition to an exhibition with multi-faceted sound and media installations by contemporary artists in our Betonhalle, a series of talks, workshops and a film programme in cooperation with the Arsenal cinema will explore Jarman's visual worlds and themes. Some of the most acute and essential questions about our society and its future will be addressed: pollution and disease, collectivity and resilience...

SHILA KHATAMI

From Berlin based artist Shila Khatami (*1976) we present the work »ausradiert« from 2017, in which the erasing function is not just a means, but the actual content of the artistic debate.

[INTERVENTION]

Clages is pleased to present a series of interventions titled •Nee danke, ich gucke nur (pt.1)• presented in the gallery´s front exhibition space and visible from street level through the large front window. Utilizing the space and its architecture, originally created with the intend of being a traditional commercial storefront and not a gallery space, the project intends to open up the gallery’s current program back to the public in a time of increased social isolation and physical distancing. Even if due to the current situation the exhibition activities and projects are forced to inevitable rescheduling or postponements, these interventions attempt to reconnect them with the public. We hope to be able to welcome you again soon - until then we will present archival works and new thoughts on our social media and website.

“To others, the universe seems decent because decent people have gelded eyes. That is why they fear lewdness. They are never frightened by the crowing of a rooster or when strolling under a starry heaven.“

Georges Bataille
The Story of the Eye (1928)

„Eyes" by Isabella Fürnkäs acts as a starting point for this archival approach. The work from her first solo exhibition at Clages in 2017 can be read as a hunger for self-determination with which Fürnkäs determinedly pursues the physical form, the body, and the gesture.

[COLLABORATIONS]

The digital programme of the 54th ART COLOGNE starts as of 18 November 2020. Together with the participating galleries, with partners from institutions, media and the economy, it has been possible to compile a diverse and sophisticated programme that is equally of interest to collectors, art fans and the curious. This includes short films, talks, live streams, the complete online catalogue and many viewing rooms of the participating galleries and dealers. https://www.artcologne.com/.

Thanks to the cooperation with the exclusive online media partner Artsy, ART COLOGNE also offers the possibility to intensively research the programme of the exhibitors, to establish direct contact and to purchase artworks.

Experimentation is the keyword that animates #Emergent, the section of #miart2021 curated for the fourth consecutive year by Attilia Fattori Franchini, who has transformed it over time into a research lab for innovative languages and experiences, and into a platform for the enhancement of emerging artists and galleries, in the early stages of their craft. Among the many artistic languages explored, including sculpture, installation and video, a strong figurative painting presence stands out: innovative brushworks, never predictable, which surprise and address major current topics such gender-related issues, new feminism, race, and ecology. Dialogue and collaboration are part of the DNA of miart in its twenty-fifth edition. We are very pleased to announce that Bradley Davies will receive the WERK.STOFF Prize for Painting from the Andreas Felger Kulturstiftung and the Heidelberger Kunstverein 2021! The Award Ceremony and Finissage will happen tomorrow 13.06 at 2 pm. Please join us Heidelberger Kunstverein for a final viewing of the WERK.STOFF exhibition before we hand over the prize! Remarks from the Jury on Davies' work: "Bradley Davies' painting combines the absurd with the social, the playfully ironic with the concretely political, noodles and ironing boards with dictators and medieval art history. Above all, however, his painting combines the classical panel painting with its manifold extensions. Davies' paintings are eclectic and close themselves off to a stylistic umbrella term; they very consciously do not distinguish between this side and the other side of the panel painting, between space and wall, or between political content and self-sufficient 'L'art pour l'art.'" The jury, which included Dr. Ulrike Groos, director of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Dr. Martin Engler, art historian, Frankfurt am Main/Berlin, and Ursula Schöndeling, selected the artist from the roster of the WERK.STOFF nominated artists*: Mojé Assefjah, Bradley Davies, Veronika Hilger, Ada van Hoorebeke and Anna Slobodnik.
