21 years later: THE CRIMSON GHOSTS recall their roots with a re-release of „Leaving The Tomb“ on vinyl
Mea Culpa… Once again. This time I have to make amends to all the fiends out there, to Ring Of Fire Records and to THE CRIMSON GHOSTS. I am late with this one. But I feel the need to inform you about the re-release of the CRIMSON GHOSTS debut „Leaving The Tomb“, that has been released in 2025. Twenty years after the original came via Fiend Force Records and marked a new heaviness in Horror Punk. Ring Of Fire Records offer this beautiful Vinyl, that includes the original album plus a bonus with original demo-tracks and live versions on an extra EP. It comes as a gatefold-LP with loads of pictures and some linernotes. An inlay with all the lyrics is also included. So this is somehow the ultimate celebration of this first CRIMSON GHOSTS output and to put it short: If you love the band and have a special connection to their debut: Do not hestitate and try to get one of the vinyls.
Back then, songs like „Regan (Is Possessed)“ (do I smell some pea soup there?) or the furious, yet melodic „King Of Skull Island“ that strikes the listener like the fist of King Kong himself were surprisingly brutal. Horrormetal? Horrorcore? Horrorpunk? THE CRIMSON GHOSTS taught us, that the frontiers between genres don’t matter, as long as the love for everything morbid is keeping everything together. It was the times, when Fiend Force showed the world how diverse horror music was. It was the kickstart of the career of the band surrounding guitar player and band-spine and main songwriter Jackal and singer Vlad who is one of the best vocalists the scene has to offer. „Leaving The Tomb“ is something like the first scent mark of his talent. When he starts to get into „Reborn Of Trioxine“ after the Zombie-Resurrection-Intro „Leaving The Tomb“, it is clear that this voice will leave a mark in Horror Punk history.
„The Dead Rise“ and they rise at full speed. Pogo dancing or head banging? It will end up in a wild mixture in the pit and infect people from different scenes, just like „Pre Mortem Extasy“. Brutality meets the beauty of haunting melodies. This album is raw and direct and captivating, also in its souvereign use of backing choirs, that pay tribute to the genres’ inventors, but clearly emphasize a vision of its own, for example with the included shouts. This vision also includes the slower number „Necrobabe“. Romantic? Well, at least there’s some string-sounds in use here. Which doesn’t make THE CRIMSON GHOSTS a particularly romantic band. „Tale Of The Haunted Wood“ ends the album with another rude assault, featuring Vlad with (in this case) a rather rude vocal style and paying hommage to – you already guessed it – to „The Evil Dead“.
Perhaps one could say that the Crimson Ghosts initially had something of Sam Raimi's classic: they sounded raw and uncompromising. Still unpolished, but convincing. This is where the bonus material is getting interesting. „At Night“ might sound raw on „Leaving The Tomb“, but the demo-version sounds far more raw. The fascinating thing is, that the potential of the song is already clearly recognizable. Same with „Death From Above“ (both recordings are from 2003). A good song is a good song. Even if the recording quality is leaving room for improvement. The energy is there. The melodies are there. It is a nice view into the pre-album era of the band. „Sons Of The Zodiac“(2003) and „The King Of Skull Island“ (2004. High speed frenzy!) give an insight into the live qualities of the early days. „The King Of Skull Island“ (2005) is a documentation of true club live experience. Sweat and untamed energy. Latest when it comes to the re-recording of „When They Howl“ from 2021, it is becoming clear how much a stunning band can improve.
This re-release is a celebration of an important Horrorpunk-Releases. If your record collection misses this gemn, get it. If you already have the original CD and are a CRIMSON GHOSTS fan, think about being part of the celebration.

21 Years Later: THE CRIMSON GHOSTS erinnern mit der Vinyl-Wiederveröffentlichung von „Leaving The Tomb“ an ihre Anfänge.
Mea Culpa… Mal wieder. Diesmal muss ich mich bei allen Fiends da draußen, bei Ring Of Fire Records und bei den CRIMSON GHOSTS entschuldigen. Ich bin spät dran mit dieser Review, dabei möchte ich Euch unbedingt über diese Wiederveröffentlichung des CRIMSON GHOSTS-Debüts „Leaving The Tomb“ informieren, die 2025 rauskam. Zwanzig Jahre nachdem das Original über Fiend Force Records erschien und dem Horror-Punk eine neue Dimension der Härte verlieh. Ring Of Fire Records haben diese schmucke Vinyl-LP veröffentlicht, die das Originalalbum sowie Demo-Tracks und Live-Versionen auf einer Bonus-EP enthält. Das gute Stück kommt als Gatefold-LP mit vielen Bildern und ein paar Liner Notes. Ein Inlay mit allen Songtexten ist ebenfalls enthalten. Dies ist also gewissermaßen die ultimative Hommage an das erste Album der CRIMSON GHOSTS. Kurz gesagt: Wenn ihr die Band liebt und eine besondere Verbindung zu ihrem Debüt habt, zögert nicht und sichert euch eine der Vinyl-Ausgaben.
Damals waren Songs wie „Regan (Is Possessed)“ (riecht es hier etwa nach Erbsensuppe?) oder das wütende, aber dennoch melodische „King Of Skull Island“, das den Hörer wie die Faust von King Kong persönlich trifft, überraschend brutal. Es war die Zeit, als Fiend Force der Welt die Vielfalt der Horrormusik demonstrierte. Es war der Startschuss für die Karriere der Band um Gitarrist, Rückgrat und Hauptsongwriter Jackal und Sänger Vlad, einen der besten Vokalisten der Szene. „Leaving The Tomb“ ist so etwas wie der erste Vorgeschmack auf sein Talent. Wenn er nach dem Zombie-Auferstehungs-Intro „Leaving The Tomb“ in „Reborn Of Trioxine“ einsteigt, ist klar: Diese Stimme wird Spuren in der Geschichte des Horror-Punk hinterlassen.
„The Dead Rise“ und sie tun es in Höchstgeschwindigkeit. Pogo tanzen oder Headbangen? Im Moshpit endet beides in einem wilden Mix, der Menschen verschiedenster Szenen mitreißt, genau wie „Pre Mortem Extasy“. Brutalität trifft auf die Schönheit eindringlicher Melodien. Dieses Album ist roh und direkt und fesselnd, auch durch den souveränen Einsatz von Backing-Chören, die den Erfindern des Genres Tribut zollen, aber gleichzeitig mit Shouts eine ganz eigene Vision unterstreichen. Zu dieser Vision gehört auch der langsamere Song „Necrobabe“. Romantisch? Nun ja, zumindest kommen hier Streicherklänge zum Einsatz. Was die CRIMSON GHOSTS aber noch nicht zu einer sonderlich romantischen Band macht. „Tale Of The Haunted Wood“ beendet das Album mit einem weiteren brachialen Frontalangriff, bei dem Vlad mit seinem hier recht rauen Gesangsstil brilliert und – wie man sich denken kann – „Tanz der Teufel“ Tribut zollt.
Vielleicht kann man sagen, die CRIMSON GHOSTS hätten zunächst etwas von Sam Raimis Klassiker gehabt: Sie klangen roh und kompromisslos. Noch ungeschliffen, aber überzeugend. Womit wir beim Bonusmaterial wären. „At Night“ mag auf „Leaving The Tomb“ rau klingen, aber die Demoversion ist noch um einiges ungehobelter. Faszinierend ist, dass das Potenzial des Songs bereits deutlich erkennbar ist. Dasselbe gilt für „Death From Above“ (beide Aufnahmen stammen aus dem Jahr 2003). Ein guter Song ist ein guter Song. Selbst wenn die Aufnahmequalität Wünsche offen lässt. Die Energie ist da. Die Melodien sind da. Ein schöner Einblick in die Zeit vor dem Album. „Sons Of The Zodiac“ (2003) und „The King Of Skull Island“ (2004 – ein wahres Hochgeschwindigkeitsspektakel!) geben einen Einblick in die Live-Qualitäten der frühen Tage. „The King Of Skull Island“ (2005) dokumentiert authentische Club-Live-Erfahrung: Schweiß und ungezügelte Energie. Die Neuaufnahme von „When They Howl“ aus dem Jahr 2021 zeigt schließlich eindrucksvoll, wie sehr sich die Band steigern konnte.
Diese Wiederveröffentlichung ist eine Hommage an ein wichtiges Horrorpunk-Album. Falls dieses Juwel in eurer Plattensammlung fehlt, holt es euch! Wenn ihr die Original-CD besitzt und CRIMSON GHOSTS-Fans seid, solltet ihr euch diese Gelegenheit ebenfalls nicht entgehen lassen.
