🔔 LAST CHANCE: , only until this Saturday, November 26th, with works by Cristina Ohlmer, Cigdem Aky & FRANZISKA KLOTZ:

Franziska Klotz's (*1979, Dresden) subject is the pure painting and how form can be created from color. It is an examination of the still central question of contemporary painting discourse: whether painting can still be relevant at all in the age of digitalization. For this purpose, Franziska Klotz chooses the most classical of all painting forms - oil painting. It is her element and the application of paint is her craft. Not only with a brush, but also with her bare hands she presses, rubs or brushes the paint onto the canvas, allowing transitions to smear and paint to run. This creative process, which can be understood by the viewer, gives her paintings additional intensity.
In addition to oil paintings, ink works on paper are an important group of the artist's works. Portraits of young women are shown in the exhibition. Their vulnerability, behind their poses, Franziska Klotz is able to convey easily and sensitively through delicately placed color forms. Klotz is not primarily concerned with narrating or documenting events, but with creating a certain atmosphere, a feeling.
Her act of painting leads the motifs into the hints of the abstract, but never completely out of the representational. Franziska Klotz has created her own color world of earthy browns, grays, beiges, purples and accents of greens or yellows. The color itself is the mood of her painting…

🔔 Tomorrow, November 17th, 19 - 21 h:
Cologne galleries tour during the ART Cologne 2022 - visit the exhibition with works by Çiğdem Aky, as well as works by Cristina Ohlmer and Franziska Klotz at GALERIE ANJA KNOESS.

Çiğdem Aky's (*1989, Munich) artistic preoccupation is with color and recalls the beginnings of color field painting. Starting from the genre of landscape painting, her subject has become a recurring scheme in her series of paintings. In the process, she has developed and established a distinctive visual language. Çiğdem Aky superimposes color in partly contrasting, partly color-familiar layers. In the geometric core of the picture, she always grants the viewer an unobstructed view into a deep space of the lower painting level, which is mostly characterized by fine color transitions. In the levels above, she works with sweeping and powerful brushstrokes that seem to frame this lower painting level like a window.
In her use of color, she also moves steadily in harmony and balance between strong and powerful as well as delicate and soft. Her colors are sometimes loud, gaudy, neon,
then again pastel and offset with white: "In the composition of the colors to a color space, it is important to me that the image as a whole reaches its greatest possible depth, into which the viewer is drawn into and which captivates him."
Çiğdem Aky initially studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Künste Karlsruhe. In 2017, she completes her studies in painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich as a master student of Prof. Helmut Dorner. In 2021 she is a scholarship holder of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg. She lives and works in Munich. Until October 2022, she will be honored as the 18th scholarship holder of the HAP Grieshaber Foundation in a solo exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Reutlingen.

: CRISTINA OHLMER

Cristina Ohlmer‘s art is visual poetry…

Cristina Ohlmer (*1960, Varese, Italy) works with transparency, light and space in a wide variety of work groups. One constant in her work are reverse paintings on glass and objects made of glass: in the current series "Lines beyond Opacity" she draws motifs and stories in delicate ink lines on and behind glass and sets them in abstract color spaces of strong red, turquoise and yellow tones. The detailed, delicate ink drawings take the viewer out of the pure color rush of these primary colors and into the story of a pensive woman and a butterfly fluttering away, a man in a rowboat on a troubled body of water, or the tangle of people, insects, animals, and mixed creatures that appears impenetrable at first glance…

Glass as a carrier of her painting has a special fascination for the draftswoman because of the possibility of expanding her pictorial motif. Cristina Ohlmer questions and examines the limits of painting through its carrier. And goes beyond it into space, into relief and three-dimensional sculpture.

💬 „There are about 2,000 students at my College of Fine Arts. I am a teacher of oil painting at the College of Fine Arts and the person responsible for this subject. There are about 600 students in this subject who want to train art teachers for elementary and secondary schools. At present, their employment situation is very good.
Full-time artists are still a minority in China, and they generally have an easy career.“ - Guo Changliang about his work as art lecturer in XinXiang, China.

I want them to be intense and implicit. Intense colors and subtle images. Maybe what you see is what I'm talking about.“ - Guo Changliang about his works represented in our current exhibition „Youth and the sea“, on display until October 15th.

for 2022

The position of the photographer Jessica Backhaus (*1970, Germany) stands as a counterpart to the paintings presented. She breaks through the boundaries of digital photography with her new series „Cut outs“. The paper collages she photographs become three-dimensional paintings with abstract content of high colour intensity and mysterious light. The circles and ovals cut from simple transparent papers are photographed by Jessica Backhaus in natural light. The paper cuts staged in this way appear in the „cut outs“ as images of abstract, three-dimensional forms and surfaces - yet they are „merely“ colourful images of real phenomena made of paper.

for 2022

The sculptures and objects by Roland Schmitz (*1972, Germany) come closest to the classical idea of abstraction due to their form, colour and material. Starting from the paper cut or the gestural stroke, he transfers line and brushstroke into the three-dimensional object. He realises the transformation of the abstracted gesture into the classical pictorial material of bronze with, among other things, the current technique of 3-D printing and laser cutting.

Martin Wehmer (*1966, Germany) creates his strongly gestural painting with expressively generous brushstrokes and impasto application of the painter‘s knife. The pure oil paint forms the motif as a plastic relief and is at the same time abstract legible colour painting. For the painter, the motif of the sitter is secondary and serves as the occasion for his characteristic realisation. Wehmer‘s painterly concept and the realisation of his subject is always aimed at the recipient and his perception of representational or abstract form and content.

for 2022

Originally trained as a sculptor, Bertram Hasenauer (*1970, Austria) peels his precisely painted por- traits out of a deep black background or places the typified faces and often monochrome body parts in a strongly reduced pictorial space created by strong colour surfaces. Hasenauer‘s typi- fied portraits are irritating images of reduction, especially in times of ubiquitous digital self-dramatisation: silence and introversion. He always focuses on the condensed concentrati- on of the sitter and the creation of space as an abstract colour surface in the two-dimensional image.

for 2022

Peer Boehm‘s (*1968, Cologne) works are created on the basis of historical photographs found on the internet as biros drawings on old nautical charts or paintings with ink, watercolour, acrylic, rust and coffee on canvas. He reduces, alters and superimposes his motifs in such a way that they become abstracted and their contents can only be understood through the context and the overall picture. By consistently reducing the underlying subject, Boehm detaches himself painterly from the photographic model. Boehm conveys the implied question of the truthful- ness of memory through the emptiness and abstraction of what is depicted. The partly limited legibility of the abstracted subject matter also addresses the psychological laws of perception and the visual habits of art reception.

Liet Heringa (*1966, s-Hertogenbosch, NL) and Maarten van Kalsbeek (*1962, Oegstgeest, NL) visualise organic growth and proliferation, the flow of colours and forms and combine these components to create spatial objects and sculptures. Their works are usually built around a core that holds a real object. This is absorbed by lines and layers of cast plastic, ropes and parts of plants, proliferating into a dynamic cosmos of sensual colour and form. The sculptures resemble three-dimensional paintings, showing neither front nor back, neither beginning nor end. They are worlds unto themselves and, in their baroque abundance of detail and accumu- lation of visual surprises, do not allow for a complete revelation of their mystery.

GALERIE ANJA KNOESS
