On Display JESSICA BACKHAUS - „Cut Outs“, until 13.08.2022 @jessica_backhaus
With her new project "Cut Outs" Jessica Backhaus follows up on her 2017 series "A Trilogy" shown at GALERIE ANJA KNOESS, with which she made a turn towards abstraction in her photographic content. The "Cut Outs" show geometric shapes hand-cut by Jessica Backhaus from colored transparent papers. She composes these with a sensitive feeling on color-intensive image backgrounds. Simple materials, simple circles and squares - seemingly arranged by a light hand - are the "cut outs" results of the artist's decades-long preoccupation with color, form and natural light in photographic pictorial space. At first glance, the papers thus depicted appear to be paintings and, at the same time, three-dimensional objects. The glistening sunlight under which Jessica Backhaus photographs these arrangements intensifies the radiance of the colors as well as the sharpness of shadows, forms, and spatial depth. Just like her earlier works, which capture the simple and easily overlooked in our everyday scenes, the "Cut Outs" are fleeting snapshots and images of reality. A complete renunciation of the representational, as the former Swiss curator Jean-Christophe Amman prophesied to Jessica Backhaus in 2008, is nevertheless not her intention, she herself emphasizes: "The Cut Outs are ultimately pure, very concrete photography. What interests me, is the tension between reality and abstraction."
