Tuning a guitar seems pretty straightforward, right? I know. But especially with low tunings in modern metal, there’s a lot that can still go wrong!

So here are 3 mistakes that we encountered in hundreds of recording sessions:

1️⃣ You only pay attention to what your tuner is telling you
Your tuner is helpful, but it’s not the whole picture. You need to actually listen to your chords and notes as well; do they sound out of tune? Does the string go sharp when you play it?

Always tune your strings so they are in tune when you hit them and go a little bit flat once the initial hit happened.

2️⃣ Your strings are too thin for the tuning
Using strings that are too light for lower tunings can cause them to vibrate inconsistently, making it impossible to stay in tune. Always select the right string gauge to ensure proper tension and pitch stability.

3️⃣ Grip of death on your left hand
Pressing down too hard with your fretting hand can push notes sharp! Learn how much pressure you actually need to fret, you'd be surprised how little pressure you actually need.
