A sub-cultural preservation initiative, NOTES FROM THE CLEVELAND UNDERGROUND is a
multi-disciplinary “scene-sampler” from this powerhouse of D.I.Y. sub-culture: showcasing fine art, photography, film, literature, posters, zines, concrete poetry and sounds from the Cleveland underground art and music scene. Featured artists include: Derf Backderf, Derek Hess, Arabella Proffer, Steve Wainstead, John G, Jake Kelly, and an exhibition of the works of concrete poet da levy courtesy of the Michael Schwartz Special Collections Library at Cleveland State University. Documentary film screenings include „if i scratch, if i write“, by Kon Petrochuk, and „Clevelands‘ Screaming“ by Brad Warner.

Zen Monk, author, blogger, and punk bassist (Zero Defex and Dementia 13), Brad Warner‘s CLEVELAND’S SCREAMING is a chronicle of one American hardcore scene and the people who made it. It’s about why their involvement in punk rock inalterably changed the course of their lives forever. It’s a close-up look at how the events in a single city reflect the way an entire generation’s attitudes and values were utterly transformed by this grass-roots movement.

da levy documentary produced & directed by KON PET MOON with Allen Ginsberg, Russell Salamon, Joan Turnbo, Russell Atkins, Martin Simon, and others. 20 years in the making, the film changed several times its original concept of just mixing readings of levy’s poetry with images of his artwork and publications. Paul Marotta of Mirrors, Electric Eels, The Styrenes leads Terry Riley’s cult masterpiece “In C”. NFTCU has invited Paul Marotta to lead 10 musicians in a performance of Terry Rileys „In C“, Fellow Styrenes member Ulli Rattay will be performing as part of the en-semble. The program will be complemented by a performance by Drums of Chaos (A project by local legend Jaki Liebezeit of Can and Popnoname aka Jens-Uwe Beyer, and other special guests. The concert is scheduled for Saturday July 30th at 8pm, as a finissage event for the Exhibition. Halle Deutz Air

„NOTES FROM THE CLEVELAND UNDERGROUND“ ist ein interdisziplinärer Szene-Sampler, eine Initiative zum sub-kulturellen Artenschutz – und bildet die gesamte Vielfalt der D.I.Y.-Subkultur ab: Bildende Kunst, Fotografie, Film, Literatur, Posters, Zines, die typographische Poesie der „concrete poetry“ sowie Klänge aus Clevelands künstlerischem und musikalischen Untergrund. Zen-Mönch, Autor, Blogger und Punk-Bassist (Zero Defex und Dementia 13), Brad Warners Cleveland Screaming ist eine Chronik der amerikanischen Hardcore Szene und ihre Initiatoren. Die Dokumentation versucht anhand des exemplarischen Beispiels Cleveland zu zeigen, wie sich die Werte und Ansichten einer ganzen Jugend durch die Ursprungsbe-wegung des Punk verändert haben.

Nach 20 Jahren Bearbeitungszeit wurde der Film unzählige Male neu geschnitten. Der Film zeichnet das Bild des Dichters anhand von Augenzeugenberichten nach. Die Uraufführung fand im MOMA/NY statt 104 min.

Paul Marotta (Mirrors, Electric Eels, The Styrenes) leitet Terry Rileys Meisterwerk “In C”. NFTCU hat Paul Marotta gebeten für eine Aufführung von „In C“ ein Deutsche Ensemble von 10 Musikern zu leiten. 2002 hatte Marotta die Terry-Riley-Komposition bereits mit den „Styrenes“ für enja Records eingespielt. Ulli Rattay spielt auch live mit. Ergänzt wird das Programm durch einen Auftritt von „Drums of Chaos“, einem Projekt der Kölner Legende Jaki Liebezeit („Can“) und Popnoname alias Jens Uwe Beyer sowie anderen special guests als Teil der Finissage der Ausstellung in der Halle Deutz Air.
