“My Soul Thirsts for God” (Meine Seele dürstet nach Gott) is among the most beautiful Romantic oboe solos in the sacred choral repertoire.
The aria is part of the Psalm “As the Hart Cries for Fresh Water”, Op. 42, and belongs to the best-known sacred works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Mendelssohn himself regarded the work as one of his most successful compositions. He composed it in 1837–38 for soprano, chorus, and orchestra. The premiere took place in Leipzig in 1838.
