⑇ Art continuously reflects our present while imagining what could come next.

During my artist residency at the MAIN Research Centre TU Chemnitz, initiated by the FUNKEN Academy, I was fortunate to collaborate with an inspiring team of experimental researchers and scientists who explore new ideas at the forefront of research. Truly. Still reflecting on the central role curiosity plays in the work of experimental scientists and artists.

Following this residency, we hosted a one-week workshop inviting art and music students to explore new intersections between artistic and scientific thinking. Working within the laboratories of MAIN, participants turned observation and experimentation into form, translating ideas through sound, video, installation, and performance finding creative resonance in scientific processes.

I am grateful to the participating students for their curiosity, creativity, and dedication throughout the workshop: Vanessa Rucks, Lino Angermann, Walter Grunt, Christopher Schröder, Tim Abels, Youshin Gim and Ludwig Sonntag. 🫶

This interdisciplinary collaboration will be presented at FUNKEN and MAIN on November 12th from 6 PM and you are warmly invited.

Heartfelt thanks to .academy for initiating and enabling this project, and to all the brilliant minds at MAIN —
Dr. Thomas Blaudeck, Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt, Anna-Maria Placht, Hongmei Tang, Dr. Minshen Zhu, Dipl.-Phys. Nathanael Jöhrmann, Dr. Peter Meszmer
Dr. Florian Fuchs, Johannes Markert, Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Morschhauser, Dipl.-Chem. Julia Hann, Dr. Daniil Karnaushenko, Dr. Vineeth Kumar Bandari, Tobias Bollig, Carol Schmidt.

This project was supported by the Free State of Saxony with funds approved by the Saxon State Parliament.

⊙ ⊘ ⋋ Calling all students and alumni from Saxon art and music universities!
I'm excited to share that I will be serving as an artistic mentor in one of the upcoming ArtScience Workshops in Chemnitz, as part of my artist residency with FUNKEN Akademie and Research Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes (MAIN) TU Chemnitz.
This is a unique opportunity to work hands-on at the intersection of art and science, alongside researchers, and fellow creatives.
You'll have access to labs, expert mentoring, and the chance to develop and exhibit your work in a professional setting.

Workshop Overview:
As part of the program, I’ll be leading the workshop:
From Nano to Art – Physics as Experimental Material
→ This workshop invites participants to explore the poetic and material possibilities of physics and nanoscience as tools for artistic experimentation.
What happens when physics meets creativity? Students will explore physical phenomena and transform them into their own artistic practice. The laboratories of the MAIN Research Centre offer both inspiration and raw material.
Students will work in diverse, interdisciplinary teams and develop experiments with analogue or digital media, video, sound, performance or installation.

In addition, you can choose from two other exciting formats:
ELIZA’s Ghost – Sociality as Simulation, led by Lenn Blaschke
Common Matter – Collaborative Research & Speculative Design, led by Yana Zschiedrich
What you’ll get:
Participate in one of three ArtScience workshops in collaboration with TU MAIN, MERGE & METech
- Mentorship from professionals in art and science
- Access to labs and research infrastructure
- Production budget for your project (flat rate, details upon selection)
- Public exhibition of the results at the FUNKEN Academy
- Visibility in the FUNKEN network and beyond
More info & application details here:
www.funken-akademie.de

Looking forward to working with curious minds and bold experimenters! Feel free to share this with students or emerging artists who might be interested.

⑇ about last week
Thrilled to announce my new Artist-in-Residence at MAIN – Research Center for Materials, Architectures and Integration of Nanomembranes in Chemnitz, in collaboration with FUNKEN Academie.

⋋ MAIN (University of Technology) is a research center where the invisible becomes tangible, where scientists work with wafer-thin, flexible materials on the nanoscale to create future technologies: wearable electronics, body-integrated systems, and microstructures that blur the boundaries between science, design, and imagination.

With my long-standing interest in the unseen and unheard ⑇ frequencies, resonances, sonic and photonic waves ⑇ this is a dream come true: I’m incredibly excited to explore the artistic potential of these advanced materials and ideas.

Endless thanks to Christoph Papendorf and Robert Verch for the invitation,
and to Dr. Thomas Blaudeck and Prof. Dr. Oliver G. Schmidt for the warm welcome and generous insight into the work at MAIN.

Also, special thanks to the researchers I met during the lab visits 🫶 thank you for sharing your work, your time, and your curiosity.

⑇ We’re happy to announce that today, July 25, we are exhibiting our audiovisual piece “Stardust for R.H.” at KoLab Days x Tresor.West at Dortmunder U - Zentrum für Kunst und Kreativität in Dortmund!

“Stardust for R.H.” is part of our joint project:
Visual Music and Sonic Shadows: Improvised Audiovisual Dialogues in Film, Animation, and Live Performance.

The piece is based on an acousmatic composition by Richard Scott using the Hordijk Modular Synthesizer as the central sound source (originally released on Hordijk Vol. 2, Flag Day Records).
Sanja Star creates the visual layer independently using 2D and 3D animation, then intuitively synchronizes it with the sound – guided by emotion, movement, and the interplay between music and image. The result is a living dialogue between sound and visuals – abstract, powerful, and authentic.
