Unfortunately we had to cancel the shows of HARMONIA this weekend due to illness. But we'll give you something to read instead. Our dear friend & long-time HODWORKS collaborator Ármin Szabó-Székely has put together a few words about the current state of the Hungarian cultural sector and his perspective on the upcoming elections in Hungary this weekend. Be sure to read! (scroll down for english)

After a small post-premiere break, HARMONIA finally returns to stage next week with a series of shows at Theater Bremen. Receiving lots of love for our latest creation together with Adrienn Hód / HODWORKS, here is what Deutschlandfunk Kultur thought about it:
“The members of the ensemble that has gathered here are close to one another in a remarkable manner, and together, and strong on stage. They really do create something akin to a safe space […] It really turned out to be a wonderful and poignant piece […], and, in a way, it is also a bit of a piece of the hour, gripping us, the audience, at the point of our current longing to subsequently celebrate together, to go dancing together, and, especially at the end, when it gets so boisterous, I felt this one moment when I thought: Yes, this is this need for physical exuberance in all of us.” (Elisabeth Nehring)
📢 next HARMONIA dates at Theater Bremen:
🔹 23./24.03.
🔸 01./02./18.04.
HARMONIA is being coproduced with Trafó House and supported by the Nationales Performance Netz Coproduction Fund for Dance, which is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and the Goethe-Institut Budapest

This is us back in 2015, when, on behalf of Goethe-Institut Ukraine, 30 aspiring young dance makers from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia & Azerbaijan met in Bremen for a two-week project directed by our Co-Directors Alexandra and Gregor. It was a project with the idea that dance, as the language we all share, would be our vehicle to overcome borders and any tension that might arise in it. It was a courageous encounter between wonderful people who became friends, a moment of peace and creativity we still remember vividly.
Today our hearts are heavy and full of sorrow for what is happening in Ukraine. We are shocked, devastated, thinking of our friends & colleagues in Ukraine and hoping they will be safe. This is madness.

Getting ready for our last show of the year. Performing FUTURALGIA tonight - could there be a better headline to say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one? It's been a wild ride and we're glad we could share some of it with you. Let's hope for even more time with each other in 2022, as we're full of ideas for exciting moments to come. See you on the other side! 👻💞
Sound wizard Ábris Gryllus has been visiting us earlier this month to not only drop some first drafts of music for our upcoming new creation with Adrienn Hód / HODWORKS, but also left us a copy of his latest release CANON on Boomkat.com. CANON is very much inspired by his work for our first HODWORKS/Unusual Symptoms creation COEXIST and what else can we say - it's a bomb! Tapes are available now, Vinyl edition is coming early next year. Check it out! 💥
P.S.: New creation premiering February 4th at Theater Bremen!
Searing footwork/computer music + cut-up vocal mutations from Hungary’s Ábris Gryllus, arriving in a vital vein of The Death of Rave releases shared by Mark Fell & Gábor Lázár, Rian Treanor and The Automatics Group. Charting new temporalities and ambiguities of the uncanny valley, ‘Canon’ ...
Samir Akika on the cover of Die Deutsche Bühne! In his contribution to the magazine's November edition, he talks about his recent creation (LITTLE) MR. Die Türen sind geschlossen, das Publikum ist da. Du weißt, dass alle im Raum Erwartungen haben. Die Inspizientin fragt, ob wir anfangen können. Du trägst noch nicht mal ein Kostüm. Du hast deine Alltagsklamotten an. Du gehst raus. Der Bühnenraum wirkt merkwürdig, das Licht falsch eingestellt,...

Will happiness find me? - Samir Akika/Unusual Symptoms
This evening of dance is so exuberantly varied and as fleeting as luck itself. Samir Akika skilfully succeeds in bringing a unifying flow to scenes that take place simultaneously. The diverse topics and modes of presentation – ranging from dance and including acting and performance – merge into one shimmering, living whole.“

HIATUS - Helder Seabra/Unusual Symptoms
“Newly re-formed dance company Unusual Symptoms courageously jumps over gaping chasms, traces order in chaos (and vice versa) while valiantly treading the fine line between past, present and future in this choreography by Helder Seabra, a choreography as compact as it is smart – while generally conveying the promising impression, an impression that carries hope for the genre’s future, that acrobatics and athletics may yet be reconciled, in a breezy and still exquisitely expressive manner.” (Hendrik Werner, WESER-KURIER)
HIATUS. Next shows coming thursday, jan 31st and friday, feb 15th at Theater Bremen.
Unusual Symptoms is a contemporary dance company, initially founded by french-algerian choreographer Samir Akika and now being run by long-term collaborators Alexandra Morales and Gregor Runge. Since its inception as a freelance ensemble in 2009, the company has toured the works of Samir Akika internationally, realized numerous projects and workshops across the globe within a long lasting and deep working relationship with the Goethe Institute and has also gathered extensive experience in working with alternating multidisciplinary and intercultural production connections with both professional ensembles as well as with amateurs and young actors. Since 2012, Unusual Symptoms are company-in-residence at Theater Bremen, whose dance department since then has been led by them.
Unusual Symptoms’ works take inspiration from different methods and artistic as well as cultural influences that flow together in open work processes. The differing approaches in content and style inherent in the different works always react anew to current artistic requirements. From the 2018/2019 season on, Alexandra Morales and Gregor Runge took over the company's artistic reins, opening its doors even more than before to working with varying guest choreographers. Unusual Symptoms produce works with internationally renowned choreographers like Samir Akika, Máté Mészáros, Núria Guiu Sagarra, Helder Seabra and Adrienn Hód/HODWORKS, continue to initiate projects with young adults and semi-professional performers and collaborate with artistic partners around the globe.

2022 nagy év a Hodworks életében.

Addig is köszönjük odaadó figyelmeteket.

______________
2022 is a big year in the life of Hodworks. This year, the company turns 15 years old and we are preparing several surprises! As a first step, we would like to present our renewed image, which is the work of Csilla Horváth and Flóra Pálhegyi!
The new restless, constantly moving logo not only reflects the way we’ve been working in these 15 years, but also what plans we are looking at this year. On February 11th and 12th, following the premiere at the Theater Bremen, we will present our latest piece, Harmonia, with the company of Unusual Symptoms at Trafó. We are working with eleven performers with and without disabilities in a performance that we hope will be able to cross other types of boundaries. In this case, we want to question the social norms that are the focus of our ideas about the human physique and the systems built around it. We hope that the progressive genre of contemporary dance can present an opening that could gain ground in the wider society as well.
Get your tickets here:

Afterwards, we will have dozens more performances all over Europe, its list is constantly updated on our website!

We will be coming up with more exciting news soon!
In the meantime, thank you for your dedicated attention.
